Hello All,

It's been pretty smoky out here in Elizabeth from the wildfires. But that didn't stop us from getting out of the house tonight. We went to dinner at Guadalajara Mexican Resturant in Elizabeth, and I was OC'ing my Smith and Wesson .40. Place was pretty busy for a Tuesday night. No one said anything about my sidearm, and plenty of people noticed it. An older couple kept looking at my sidearm, but I think it was more out of curiosity. We finished, paid our tab and went off to Walmart down the street.

We get to Walmart, start shopping around, and guess what? No one cared about my openly carried pistol. Plenty of folks saw it there, and not one peep from anyone. All in all, a great night to OC and spend some time with my lady. The best thing was she didn't say a thing about my sidearm tonight! She usually gives me a stink-eye when I chamber a round and holster it before leaving the house. And she usually asks me questions as to why I have to carry that thing everywhere. But tonight, she didn't say one word! Wow! She amazes me each and everyday. Now I should slowly convince her to start carrying.

All in all, a great night! Even though it smells like campfire.

Blessings,

Keens

I live about 20 miles East of Kiowa and the smoke is killing us out here to0.

I haven't had the chance to eat there yet. My brother has and he says it's pretty good. I've also OC'd in the Elizabeth WalMart quite a bit and never had a problem.

Hello Beau,

I hope you're doing okay! Yea downtown Elizabeth was choked in smoke last night. It was raining ash a little bit, I kept brushing off white ash off of the black shirt I was wearing. The haze was a pretty amazing sight and I took a few pictures of it. I was talking to my fiancée last night about bugging out if we had to, she said where would we go? I told her we could go to her parents and she said they are smoked out too from the fires by Boulder. *sigh* Sure hope we all get some good rain soon. I hope to see you around sometime soon! We will have to have a little OC meet up!

Stay safe,

Keens

hey keens, just curious about this part. i understand if you keep your gun and ammo separate, that's fine. do you re-chamber the same round repeatedly as you leave the house and unload? reason i ask is b/c i've heard you should try to limit chambering of the same round b/c of shortening. just curious.

Hello Widowman,

We have a kid in the house, so she asks that I keep my sidearm unloaded and in the safe when not in use. When I take it out every morning, I insert the mag and chamber a round nice and slow. I don't just hit the release button and slam the slide closed. I don't like slamming things or just being hard on them unless I have to. I also clean my sidearm at least once a week or after shooting it. I even clean my 2 mags. Pretty amazing how dirty my EDC gets each week. Dust, dirt, dog hair after a week! I make a pile of all 29 rounds, so any of those rounds could be the one that goes in the tube. With a random round each week, and how I handle the slide to chamber a round, I don't have any concerns about shortening a case. I also replace my SD ammo every couple of months and shoot off the old ones. No issues at all from either the ammo or the sidearm.

Blessings,

Keens

Just a few things came to mind as I read this. I hope you practice that safe combo or whatever you do constantly. If it's biometric, then no worries. I say that because in the heat of the moment the worst thing would be to screw up the combo. I kind of do the opposite. I leave my safe open at night with the gun loaded and ready. I can't carry at my office, so I leave it at home for my wife. She doesn't quite feel ready to have it with her all day (she's getting there though) so I unload the round before I leave and lock it in the safe. That way my kids don't end up playing with it during the day. As soon as I get home, it's out and ready to go for the night.

I use the combo everyday. I have a Gunvault Deluxe. Took a bit of practice, ad now I can open it pretty quickly and get the code right 98% of the time. It's a great safe and I'm happy with it. I can't carry at work on my person either, so I leave it in my glovebox. My fiancée isn't ready to use a firearm yet to defend herself when she's alone. She told me she doesn't want the combo and she isn't going to use my handgun. She'd rather use one of her many knives until she is ready to get her own sidearm and a CHP. I have a 12 ga M5 I just recently purchased that she could use if she decided to when I am not home.

Nothing wrong with that.

I am happy to hear you are back on track with the lady. Good news on that score.

Since I do not have kids around, all of our handguns are all loaded (including one in the tube) at all times.
Whether we are carrying a specific firearm or leaving it at the homestead, they are loaded and ready for action.
That's just me. If something bad happens, I want to be able to grab a sidearm and halt the threat without any delay whatsoever.

Meanwhile, I surely did wish you were with me today. I got a call from a lady who needed a serve done, and I met with her at 5:30.
She gave me papers to be served on the respondent, and I drove to his location and within 5 minutes completed my serve and was on my way home.
They don't always go down easy, but this one was a total breeze.

Maybe next time you ride shotgun, we'll get one like that!

Hello M-T,

Thanks, I'm sure happy things are doing much better. If I didn't have a kid in the house, every single one of my guns would be loaded and chambered. I guess I will be able to do that again once the kid is out in a few years. He will be 11 in a few weeks. So about 7-9 years to go. I've been teaching him firearm safety. I teach him the basics on nerf guns, and we also do a bit of shooting with my .22. He wants to try my sidearm and I have let him hold it. After I have verified it is unloaded, of course! He can't squeeze the trigger on it yet, so we stick to the .22 and he is doing great on it! He is a very safe shooter! He has also shot an AR-15 .223 and did very well.

I would've loved to come on your serve today! Just let me know and I'll ride shotgun and we can get some people served!

I've got a 10.5 YO that I teach/train about guns every chance I get.

Just yesterday I was showing him an AR build I've got going. It was only a complete lower, and upper attached. No barrel. He took it gingerly and said, "I don't know this gun, is it cleared and safe?" I was so proud, and showed him how to check for himself. No barrel on it at all. I used it as a training aid. Kids CAN be taught about guns. SHOULD be taught about guns. All my guns are loaded, although they are locked up usually (not including the one on my hip 24/7 at home), I relish the soon approaching future when I can feel confident in his responsibly to have the access.

Wow, do you have four kids?! The wooden sword muzzling pic made me laugh.

We should have a kids shooting practice session when you hold your next M&G at your range! They would love that! I work with my stepson every chance I get to teach him safety and handling skills. He has learned a tremendous amount in the last few months! I think hes going to be a gun owner/carrier himself in the future. I've told him he can have my Marlin model 60, but I will keep it in my possession until he's old enough and responsible enough to possess it.

Hello,

I very much agree that kids can and SHOULD be taught about guns! Too much negative info and the media making guns look bad and that only cops and bad guys carry. Many parents these days shield their kids from firearms and don't teach them what to do if they should ever come across one. Sadly, there have been many accidents from a child that found a gun and thought it was a toy and handled it and someone got hurt or killed. I've taught my stepson what to do if he ever sees one. Don't touch, and always get an adult's attention. And always ask if it's clear before handling a firearm and while I'm (or another family adult familiar with gun safety) is holding the gun, check and see if it's clear with your own eyes. There's a book "My Parents Open Carry" (dont know the author name in my head) that I plan to buy for him and I'm also looking for a youth gun safety class for him.

*prays for a wardrobe malfunction* (in the video.. not your wedding! lol )

Actually, I think her wardrobes function rather well in her collaborations with Robert Rodriguez.

Remember the other thread when we were talking about self-defense situations and hesitation? Would anyone else have at least a second of weighing their options in this dilemna?
