New Delta Airline Checked Firearm Policy

The story: http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Delta-Implements-New-Rule-For-Guns-in-Checked-Bags-417732003.html

The airline will now have special tags to alert ground handlers to not put bags carrying weapons on the general carousel.

The baggage will go directly to a baggage service agent who is required to perform an ID check on the passenger who picks up the luggage, sources told NBC 6. The agent must then use zip ties to secure the bag.

Seems like the new policy is actually a violation of the law, though.

(b) No common or contract carrier shall require or cause any label, tag, or other written notice to be placed on the outside of any package, luggage, or other container indicating that such package, luggage, or other container contains a firearm.

I agree. And a terrible idea.

The orange, unloaded gun tags used to go on the outside of bag and were referred to as "steal me" tags. While most are honest, it isn't like baggage handlers are being drawn from the upper ranks of society and being grossly overpaid.

That said, I do wish airports in the US would not have baggage claim in a completely unsecured area of the airport. It would be far better if baggage claimers were required to show their claim tickets and match it with the stickers on the bag. Folks would scream about yet another, slow, inefficient line at the airport. At the very least, it would nice if only arriving passengers could routinely enter the baggage claim area, and then exit through a one-way gate similar to that used to control access to the actual secure area of the airport.

I just flew from Seattle to Shreveport. At Seattle they swabbed my bag for explosives, but never had me open the gun case. Red tag, and off to the plane with its own personal delivery person. At Shreve it came out on the regular carousel. Going back they didn't inspect my bag at all, they just had me put the "It's Unloade tag" inside. At SEA my bag did not come out on the carousel, I had to go into the baggage office and show ID to get it. I flew American BTW. All in all I found flying with a gun very easy. Granted I wasn't crazy about the red "steal my gun" tag, it seemed to get me through quicker.
