Many years ago I was driving through Virginia at night and needed to stop at a Rest Area. I had not really planned on stopping at a Rest Area but as I was heading east on I64 and coming in to Richmond I decided to stay on I64 in hopes of finding a populated area or open gas station. Not seeing anything that looked good, I made it to the far side of Richmond and came upon a Rest Area.

As I had needed to go when I reached Richmond, by the time I had gotten to the Rest Area, I was really needing to go. As I pulled in I noticed two "gentlemen". One was on the payphone and the other was sitting on a park bench. There was only one car parked all the way past the building and it appeared to be a beat up AMC Gremlin.

I stopped and parked before the main building, jumping out and running in quickly.

I finished my business and started to come out of the restroom in to the lobby, I could see that the two "gentlemen" had moved, well, at least one had. The one that had been on the phone was now leaning on my truck against the drivers side door smoking a cigarette. I immediately backed back in to the restroom as my spidey senses started to go haywire. Why was he leaning on my truck, was he up to no good, was he just wanting to chat or need a ride? I did not know but knew that I was at a very severe disadvantage. I did not have any weapon on me as my pistol was in the truck.

Now this was prior to cell phones for anyone but the extremely wealthy and even then, it probably would have been mounted in the vehicle too.

So, I decided to sneak out the side door that went directly out to the side of the building. From there I went down the sidewalk to where everyone walked their dogs. I went through the grass not worrying about that though. I circled far enough to come around to the passenger door of my truck. I had pulled my keys out and had them ready to open the door.

I reached the door, jumping in quickly and locking the door behind me.

The "gentleman" that had been leaning on my door was startled and stepped away as he turned to see what had just happened.

What happened next erased any thoughts that this man was not a danger. He spun around and grabbed the door handle, which was locked thank God, and tried to open the door. He said a cuss word and his buddy sitting on the bench was laughing hysterically.

I, in the mean time, was trying to slide over the seats and get behind the wheel. Unfortunately I had a bunch of crap sitting in my way and had to bulldoze through that. At this point I was just wanting to get away and leave.

This gentleman that was now yelling at me. Ya know, the funny thing is that with all the adrenaline I had going, I was only hearing some of it. (This worries me as it could have a bad effect if it was a police officer yelling at me) Anyway, I digress.

The "gentleman" slammed his fist/hand in to my side window and miraculously it did not break. I realized that getting away may not be an option and decided to up the ante in my favor.

So, I reached under my front seat and pulled out my Model 65 4 inch .357 Magnum. Now, before you guys slam me, I was young and dumb and had never been warned about keeping a firearm there. Of course that night I learned the hard way that under the front seat is a poor place to keep a firearm. Not only can it slide out in a stop, which is what everyone warns about, but bringing it up and getting it pointed in the right direction without it hitting everything from the column shifter to the steering wheel is daggone near impossible.

Fortunately, the "gentleman" outside saw my struggle and what I was struggling to point at him and as his eyes got big as saucers, he uttered "Oh $%^T" or something like that. His buddy, believe it or not, was now rolling with laughter even though he could see what I was pointing at his friend. Some friend hey?

Anyway, I managed to get the key in the ignition and get the truck started. I threw it in reverse and backed out, almost hitting the smoking man. He was flipping me off and ranting in my rearview mirror as I continued eastward. I had managed to drive away without shooting anyone but I have a feeling that without my firearm, I would have been in deep doo doo.

I have reviewed this incident in my head many times and know that my reaction under pressure, while almost three stoogish, actually did keep me safe that night.

My biggest lesson is that you always hear of the effects of the massive adrenaline rush but think that it can't be that bad. Trust me, when it happens, it does have a major effect on your abilities.

I mean, I almost busted the window for the guy when I switched from weak hand to strong hand and the barrel hit the glass hard. That would have been very bad.

Anyway, anyone that doesn't believe "Guns Save Lives" have never had something like that happen to them!

Sounds like you could have just drove away....why not?

I do not use my gun to scare people. If I un-holster my gun, someone IS getting shot.

I have relived this in my head numerous times and know that I must have had an angel watching over me doing face palms at the mistakes I made.

I only had one leg over the driveshaft hump when I went for my revolver. I reached under the seat with my right hand. As I brought the gun up, I had to knock the nylon holster off with my other hand, causing me to loose balance and hit my head on the steering wheel. A four inch barrel is not the biggest barrel out there but in the cab of a truck, it is huge. I swear it hit everything between the floor and the dash as I brought it up.

One thing I thought was funny was that the guy trying to get in never put his smoke down. He hit my side window with his free hand as he kept turning to yell at his buddy to come help.

The other guy wanted nothing to do with it as he was the first one to see me point the gun at his friend. His friend turned his head back and realized I was awkwardly pointing a gun at him with my left hand. His attitude instantly changed.

Now, when I say awkward, you try it. Hold your gun in your left hand (which is my strong hand BTW) and try and sit in a truck seat normally and point it at the window. I look back and realize that if I had actually fired in that position, it probably would have broken my wrist.

I started practicing more weak handed after that incident.

The strange part is that I was actually scared I was going to get in to trouble as I sped away. One thing I was afraid of was that THEY would call the police and say that I had pointed a gun at them. I did not rest easy that night worrying that my truck and tag number was on an APB and I would get pulled over by Virginia's finest at any time. I did not sleep well until I left Virginia a few days later.

Gunning from inside a vehicle is awkward in the best of situations.

We should all be more aware of what we junk up our vehicles with that might impede tactical movement.

There was no one else at the stop? I've used that place several times and I don't think I've ever seen it deserted except maybe the middle of the night.

It was around midnight and no one was there but myself and those two.

I am glad you all are safe. Reading these give me the goose bumps. I comment though, firing a 357 in the cab of a truck would most likely cause you to pass out. I can't even imagine how loud that would be. I bet you would loose your hearing for a few days at least.

The biggest lesson is always take your pistol into the rest room of a rest area late at night no matter how bad you have to go. This or start wearing a foley cath so you don't have to stop....lol

Why do it just late at night? And seeing as how Virginia is an open carry state tere is no need to try and hide anything. Situational awareness, however, needs to be maintained. For me this means not turning my back to the room, regardless of what needs to be done.

stay safe.

Yea, I bet for now on he hosters up and keeps it on his hip where it belongs. Glad it turned out ok. In a free OC state like Virginia there is no need to keep it under the seat.

The saddest part of this story is...

The saddest part of this story is that when I told it to some of my co-workers at the time that were anti-gun as a means to let them know that guns do have legitimate use, they berated me for pulling a gun on an "unarmed" man.

I asked them how do they know he was unarmed as I certainly did not know and they replied that if he would have been a bad guy with a gun he just would have shot you.

I was really taken aback as I had to defend my pulling of my firearm as they dismissed all of the reasons I gave. They dismissed the guy grabbing the door handle by saying he probably just needed a ride. They dismissed him hitting the window by saying that he was probably just upset that you were not letting him ask you for a ride.

They basically were making me out to be the aggressor and the bg as the victim because I had pulled a weapon first. No one would respond when I asked if it would have been better if I had let the bg draw his gun first and get a round or two off first, in the name of fairness of course!

I did not get in to many discussions with that group after that. This was fine with them as from then on I was the Official Office Gun Nut!

Amazingly one of the quieter girls I worked with came up to me later and asked if I could help her with something private. I was not sure what she meant but agreed.

She confided that her ex-bf had raped her and was scared he would do it again. She said she had broken up with him because he was in to rough sex and would hurt her. When she broke up with him, he forced himself on her. She had not called the police.

I urged her to report it and she said she would think about it. But, she wanted me to help her pick out a gun.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to get involved but knew that I could not live with myself if I did not help and something happened to her.

She met me at a gun store with an inside range. After looking at a few different models she liked the feel of a slightly used S&W .38 Chiefs Special. It was a small 5 shot .38 and she shot it well with light 38 loads. She finished out by shooting some 125 grain hp rounds that she saved half a box of to take home.

We actually went shooting 3 times over a month before she started being confident in her shooting. In fact, her whole attitude changed. I could see her hold her shoulders back and walk like she was in charge instead of like a beat dog. I was happy for her change in confidence.

Funny thing, she never brought our trips to the range up at work, and, although nice to me, did not approach me for anything else.

I guess she did not ever have to use that gun, but then again, she seemed like the type that may just use it, then dispose of the body and never tell a soul!

Zardoz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zardoz in reverse - "The gun is bad!" Therefore anything done with the gun is bad.

Either that or those folks just refuse to believe that .... - no, forget that, they did say if the other guy had a gun he would have just shot you. I think that might be the clue - you didn't just shoot the guy even though you had a gun in your hand, so there must be something wrong with you.

stay safe.

I was young and more naive than I care to admit when this incident occurred.

I guess the biggest disappointment brought about due to my being naive was that there were actually people that felt that it would have been better for me to get injured than to use a gun in self defense.

The actually said that those guys probably did not want to kill me and would probably just have taken my vehicle as their POS Gremlin appeared to be in bad shape.

I fought them on every point asking why I should have to take a beating so that they can have my truck.

It did not matter what I said, they always put it back on me that I should have just complied and given them what they wanted because no truck is worth my life and no truck was worth me killing them over.

I learned really good lessons during these arguments about the total irrationality of the anti-gun, anti-self-defense mindset.

It really scared the daylights out of me that people could think things so stupid. I mean, they valued the criminal and his plight more than they valued me, a law abiding citizen and fellow co-worker.

One of them actually said that I was targeted because my truck was fairly new and I kept it shining and they only had a beat up old Gremlin, like that somehow made everything all right.

I may not have converted any of them but the lessons I learned from them have stayed with me to this day.

I will not give an inch on MY RIGHT to self defense. I will not compromise my safety over someone else's discomfort. I will not vote for anyone that has ever compromised on gun rights. They made me what I am today with their idiotic "roll over and die" attitudes that made me nauseous then but stronger now.

So, rant over....

Road-side rest areas are known "cucaracha" nests.

I would never pull over in one, let alone exit my vehicle - unarmed.
I absolutely would not enter the "facilities" at rest areas unarmed.
Oklahoma law for example prohibits licensed CCW into a rest area "facility" - go figure.

I spent a lot of years as an OTR truck driver, and frequently had to sleep in these dens of vermin never responding to knocks on my cab door without S&W in hand.

Incidentally for what it's worth - when heading through the South I always tried to make it to ALABAMA where you will find the most beautiful, safest, cleanest, and (at that time anyway) "pest" free rest areas.

Unfortunately, people like this are likely to be on a jury (supposed to be of our "peers") if we ever have the horribly bad luck to have to defend ourselves.

Sad & disgusting. And I can't believe that if they were in a similar situation they wouldn't also fight for their lives.

Nitpick... the word you want is nauseated.
Nauseous is an appearance which produces nausea in the viewer.
Nauseated is the feeling resulting from viewing something nauseous.
