I OC'd last Monday at Menard's and Gander Mountain. I don't normally post my experiences which are usually uneventful, but on this occasion I had an encounter with a young man, maybe in his early 20s. He was a Menard's employee. I was there with my dad and needed to use the restroom. I went in and did my business in quite a busy restroom. There was another father in there with three or four of his children and a couple of other individuals. I kept very aware of who was near me or behind me at all times. As I was drying my hands, I could see an employee walking up to the dryer next to me. He finished quickly and walked out. I walked out moments after he did and started glancing around the nearby isles for my dad who was wandering around.
The young man was just hanging around the area, and I had a feeling that he was wondering about my sidearm. He approached me, and very politely said, "Can I ask you what you have on your hip?" I wasn't sure how to take his question, so I simply answered, "It's a Springfield XD in 9mm." He asked if I was law enforcement to which I replied "no." He then told me that he didn't "think" it was allowed in there. I asked if it was posted and informed him that it was legal. I also told him that the last time I was there that I made a number of purchases in various departments and dealt with at least half a dozen associates and chatted with a few fellow customers, none of whom said a word about my firearm. He seemed surprised and said that he had just never seen that (OC).
A brief conversation ensued, and I believe he went away with a positive attitude toward OC. I told him that criminals aren't likely to be walking around the store with a holstered pistol, rather they hide them until they are ready to use it. I made a few other comments and statements about OC, CC, and the 2nd Amendment, all of which he agreed with verbally or with a nod. I only wish I would have had some information that I could have put in his hand. I'm sure I gave him and his co-workers something to talk about at break time as well as a topic for him to Google after work.
No one else in Menard's or Gander Mountain seemed to notice or care that I was carrying.
