While the Deputy was wrong, and the Sheriff department could learn a lot about being gracious and polite, I do not see a lot of damages to argue for. I think a suit would win; I do not see lots of money past the lawyers fees.

Are you kidding? We had a member here that bragged about making money off these kind of flubs by LE. I think he was getting 25 grand each.

Update. I got my permit back this afternoon. I didn't receive any apology from the sheriff. And the lady who handed me my permit back didn't seem to happy about me being allowed to legally carry a firearm again in the state of Iowa.

Do not let this be the end of it. Your rights were violated. There is no acceptable excuse for it. Find a good(ruthless) attorney and take them for every cent you can get. Document everything, make 'stupid' hurt.

I think that's the worst part of the whole affair. They clearly demonstrate that they don't care that they were wrong, and that they feel that their personal opinions are what really matter. Sadly, there is only one way for them to learn their lesson. Are you willing to pursue it?

Sounds like we need to have an open carry march at/around Plymouth County and their Sheriff's office.

Ok, so I just watched the video. Aside from my arugment that these police employees should never be allowed to stop someone JUST because they are carrying to check for a permit, I just realized that he forced you to illegally carry your firearm. Unless I am mistaken and he took your firearm, which I didnt see in the video.

And unfortunately, as these ***** tend to protect their own, even when their crimes are obvious, a complaint is just a step in the process for a lawsuit. The complaint will do nothing to hurt that ****'* employment.

I dont see any criminal charges being brought against this police employee or his upper management, but you could get a pretty good paycheck from it. Good luck and keep us posted.

The USSC ruled this year that (short of some constitutional rights violations) LEOs have qualified immunity when they break the law, as long as they can convince a court that they though they were obeying the law.

I'm guessing the best you will get (and it may be worthwhile) is a DPS letter issued and passed down to notify LEOs of what the law is.

Ignorance is no excuse...unless of course you wear a shiney badge and carry a gun.

Our rights are gone in this country. There is nothing to be done about incedents like these. We are getting our hands tied more and more every day by men in robes. Its sickening.

Back on topic...please considering following through with this. This a clear violation of your 1st, 2nd, and 4th amendment rights. We need to get Iowa back on track with our rights.

It’s time to open a can of worms. Not A Victim (NAV) I saw your story/video on another forum that had a link to this thread. When you are first asked about your paper permit, why can’t you just say ‘Officer Singer, when I renewed by carry permit, your department only provided me a courtesy card.’ Why is that so hard? Instead you don’t answer the question by saying ‘I don’t need a paper permit’ over and over. You drag this out by acting all righteous and not answering a simple question. There’s youtube videos of guys acting like you that eventually get dragged out of their cars through a bashed in window and get ‘served & protected’ because they are trying to be Mr. Smarty Pants and escalate the situation by being non-cooperative.

You think you know you know the law, which you don’t. The State of Iowa doesn’t offer a courtesy card, you repeatedly said the State does. I live two counties from Plymouth Co., I need to have the 8”x4” paper permit to carry because the county I reside in doesn’t offer a courtesy card.

I see you live in Le Mars, I’m from there too. Have you seen the following news story about this guy in Le Mars?

http://www.siouxlandnews.com/story/29447476/man-carries-gun-in-support-of-open-carry-law

I see this guy and just shake my head. We have freedom of speech, but a person shouldn’t run around screaming ‘look at me I’m crazy and an idiot’ because people will think you are crazy and an idiot. That’s common sense. A guy walking down the street with a confederate flag shirt and an AR15 to show his support for the 1st & 2nd amendments is drawing the wrong type attention to themselves. This guy may legally be able to do this but, do you think the people that are driving by in car, looking out their windows or walking down the sidewalk know that this is legal? Who do you they call when they see this guy? This guy wastes LEOs time because of his ‘look at me’ antics. They probably get several calls every time this guy decides to express his rights. I wonder if this guy knows who John Crawford III is?

This isn’t the way to bring attention to the first and second amendments. This guy is doing more harm than good. Soccer moms drive by are probably freaked out and if they find out that what he is doing is legal, they aren’t going to say ‘oh, okay that’s fine’. They are going to say ‘they should change the law, that’s scary and we need to protect the children’. This guy is looking for a conflict. He's probably just waiting to have a LEO to approach so he can record a video of himself discussing his rights and post it on youtube.

What I don’t understand is why would a gun owner show off their guns? 'Oh look, this guy has an AR-15, add that to the list of other guns he has opened carried'. Why does this guy want others to know what he has for guns? I don't want anyone to know what I have for guns.

NAV, one question for you: do you know the guy in the story linked above? I’m guessing you know this person.

Can't help but wonder if the "troll" is one who shares the same epidermis, clothing, shower, and employment as the OEO in the OP's video. But, that is just me wondering outloud....

That thought crossed my mind also~~~remember in the incident in NOLA that a noobie possibly OEO ended up posting in that thread.

Probably a troll, but Ill bite.

If you are who I think you are, you should know that citizens are not required to answer questions. And the OP has the right to say whatever he likes. There is also no law requiring us to be cooperative. The OP was right, your co-worker was wrong.

And those youtube videos that you mention of people getting "served" are videos of police employees breaking the law. Call it what you want, but we all know what is happening. And if you support that, or are a part of it when it happens, then you sir, are criminal as well.

Ignorance of the law...hmm..seems to work both ways in the OP video. Except the OP wasn't actually breaking any laws, the servant was.

I see you live in Le Mars, I’m from there too. Have you seen the following news story about this guy in Le Mars?

It matters not what the public knows is legal or not. It falls to the 911 operator and to responding officers to educate the citizens of the city about the legality of it. Earlier you mentioned "Serve and Protect". Well, that goes for everyone. Not just the sheep that call in because someone is exercising their rights in a way they dont like.

This isn’t the way to bring attention to the first and second amendments. This guy is doing more harm than good. Soccer moms drive by are probably freaked out and if they find out that what he is doing is legal, they aren’t going to say ‘oh, okay that’s fine’. The 2nd Amendment says "shall not be infringed". That means he can carry his guns, any of them, any damned way he pleases, regardless of what you, or some soccer mom thinks.

I know you're probably a troll. And you are just trying to get a rise out of us. But the fact of the matter is; open carry and the 2nd Amendment are here to stay. If you decide that our exercise of the 2nd Amendment is too much for you to handle, then move to one of those countries that have disarmed their populace, including their police. I am sure you'll feel much safer.

And I agree with JoeSparky. Probably a co-worker or possibly even the servant seen in the OP video.

Nope, I'm not Rick Singer. I know Rick, i went to school with him. I haven't talked to him in over 25 years. He was the last guy I would've ever thought that would've gotten into law enforcement. Serving in the army probably did that too him.

As far as who shares the same epidermis, clothing, shower and employment as the OP - see the news article.
