Instructor question

I have relatives who live in MN and have asked me about concealed handgun permit requirements, including training. I've looked at the MN website and see that an instructor must be "...certified as a firearms instructor within the past five years by an organization or government entity that has been approved by the Department of Public Safety in accordance with the department's standards..." Does an NRA instructor count? Is range training involved?

Thanks!

NRA instructor is the most used instructor to fulfill any state requirement. so YES a NRA instructor counts :) Range time i am not entirely sure. but there are numerous NRA courses that are given for "firearms in the home" which usually satisfies state requirements that do not involve rage time. the one i took my instructor came to my house and gave us the course so i could get my CCW. and i fired no weapons. i would contact a NRA instructor in your state just a phone call away and ask if range time is a requirement :)

however if the person applying for the permit is not too gun savvy , or is not sure of themselves i would highly advise a course that does include range time and live firing of weapons. that way they get a grip on what to do and what not to do :) hope this helps :)

This is completely incorrect.

A NRA Instructor CAN BE a certified instructor, but is not by default. A MN Permit to Carry (not concealed handgun permit - no requirement to conceal in MN ;) ) instructor needs to be under an organization that's approved by the Department of Public Safety. As you aptly found:

The BCA maintains a list of instructor organizations here.

And yes, there is a shooting exercise that is determined by the instructor.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions, or you can give your relatives my contact info...
