Gov. Otter signs bill to allow guns on Idaho college campuses
KTVB ^ | 3/12/2014 | ktvb staff

BOISE -- A controversial bill to allow guns on Idaho college campuses has been signed into law by Gov. Butch Otter.

The legislation allows a limited group of people to carry concealed weapons on college and university campuses. Supporters say the bill protects people's Second Amendment rights.

In his approval letter, Otter stated that he has a sworn responsibility to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution, and this legislation fulfills that charge. He vowed to carefully monitor the situation to alleviate any safety concerns.

Senate Bill 1254 garnered a lot of opposition from college professors, university administrators and students. Multiple Idaho police chiefs and the heads of all of Idaho's colleges and universities oppose the bill. However, the Idaho Sheriff's Association is supporting this legislation that would allow retired law enforcement officers and people with enhanced concealed carry permits to bring a gun on campus.

The bill does not allow concealed carry inside a dorm or residence hall, or inside an auditorium or stadium with seating for at least 1,000 people.

Nampa Sen. Curt McKenzie sponsored the bill. He says there's language in the bill that allows college and university leaders to ban open carry.

The bill easily won approval in the Idaho House and Senate. It becomes law on July 1.

I see some clear problem here, just begging to be exploited.

It does not allow concealed carry within specific areas, and also allows college and university leaders to ban open carry. So...ehm...basically, it accomplishes little to nothing, when you think about the whole "walking through a doorway makes you a criminal" aspect. How exactly is one to enter these areas, without potentially violating a law, short of not having the weapon to begin with?

Handing the anti's a defeat around their last main strong hold the schools and higher education gun free zones.

Is a very good thing they fought this very hard and lost.

It well be easier to amend this for the better in the future.

I for one am very happy with this. My wife goes to BSU. Many times she has to walk alone, in the dark. It is not safe. She does keep her gun in the car but that is usually very far. Soon she will be able to cc on her person. Much better and safer. I still think oc would be best but that's really not her thing

Hopefully, each residential College/University will have a secure place for said items.

Despite all the hot-air coming from Tx-Gov-running-for-Prez Rick Perry, (1) you can't carry guns on college campuses here in TX, including the UT Southwestern Med School, ((2) and illegals get in-state tuition thanks to him)).

My wife worked with this lady - Karen Cox Smith - who was murdered by her estranged husband in a GFZ here in Dallas at the Medical School parking lot at night. Typically she asked UT LEO to escort her to her car after hours, but there was a screwup - she thought her husband had been p/u by police and wasn't a threat, but the sneaky bast*rd was on the loose and shot her dead in the parking garage....

Article says the UTSW campus is generally crime free, but right behind it at the Dallas Market Hall there have been numerous rapes and robberies in the parking garages - downplayed in Dallas media due to influence of the Harlan/Trammell Crows in Dallas.

That is a tragic story. Just serves as an example of how no protective order or warrant can save you when faced with the ultimate threat. Most here would agree that the only thing that might have saved the lady would have been an easily accessible gun of her own. RIP.
