I almost shot my son!!!

We had a wooden door that warped and would not lock. Before we got it replaced, my sister-in-law stopped by one night, (very) lightly tapped on the door and walked right in with a very quiet "Hello?"

While I did not tell her that I was ready to shoot her, I did explain to her what COULD have happened and suggested that she knock loudly and speak loudly to get our attention.

The story has become "He threatened to shoot me!"

Whatever works, right?

I don't know about your family, but with mine "he threatened to shoot me!" is a funny story that gets told for laughs while the moral is still clearly understood.
