One quick question

Is it legal to open or conceal carry a hatchet?

or like a native american style tomahawk

Check that page, it's one of the best interpretations of California's odd and often vague knife laws. Basically, open carry of any blade is fine. You could carry a 5-foot Scottish claymore if you choose. But you can't conceal any fixed blade knife, or anything that could be readily used as a stabbing weapon. That could be anything from a bowie knife to an ice pick, or even a knitting needle or ballpoint pen. Did I mention the law was vague? But I seriously doubt that anyone could argue that an axe or hatchet is a stabbing weapon. It's far more cutty than stabby. And axes are not mentioned anywhere by name so you should be good to go.

I so want a tomahawk too! I saw one of those modern weapons shows on tv. Can't remember the show (dang it!), but they were talking all about tomahawks and their history and showed a uniquely made model for the guys in Iraq. I've never been able to find that model. If anyone saw that show and knows who made it or where to find it let me know...it was the badest tomahawk I've every seen.

Thanks for the pic and link. That isn't the one I saw on the show. I'll have to keep watching for it to come on again and record it. They gave the name of the company and all, but it was late and I was half asleep.

Googling "US troops use tomahawks in Iraq" turned up a weblog that mentions the "Bullseye Tomahawk".

I'm not sure if that's the one you're looking for, but I think I'd like to own one... or four.
