Walking dog down main drag Abbotsford I see a guy ahead getting into his truck, then get back out. Seemed like he was waiting for me? Said good morning, he said NOT REALLY. I said sorry to hear that. He said I don't like you carrying a gun around in the open like that. Stopped walking and turned around. (I had on a winter jacket, and I'm sorry to admit I wasn't even armed) He had seen me around in the summer and it bothered him enough that he finally had to say something.

I don't remember ever seeing him before. Didn't see any reason to scare people like that, he was an MP in the Marines, maybe 35-40? We talked for maybe 20 minutes, actually had a nice conversation tho he said we would have to agree to disagree. He said it was legal and I had the right to do it, he just didn't like it. I basically just said ok, which really seemed to irk him a little. I got my points in on why I OC, and he responded he didn't like it, it scares people. Mentioned he was the 6th person I've talked to in 6 years negative, people either don't notice or don't care. He noticed and he cared.

Then he threw something at me that totally sent me for a loop, which will take a little explaining. He said " I don't think it's right that the District Administrator's husband can walk around town with a gun, but my friend Randy can't work at the sports bar he just opened cause the "school" thinks it looks bad being a teacher and serving alcohol".

So, I said first, I fail to see how those are connected. Second, I haven't heard anything about this, but it sounds like you got some bad information. There was a closed down supper club that was just purchased and reopened as a sports bar. Only two non fast food places in this town, now three. It's called Randall's and the major money is a guy named Randy, who is a teacher at the school. I saw in the paper they got a liquor license, but I have not been there. We had plans to take (and pay for) her administrative team out for Christmas there, but could not work out logistics so gave cash cards instead.

So, when I got home I asked my wife about it and she said that is the rumor going around town. She said the only conversation she's had with Randy about this was when he came to her and HE mentioned he wondered if it looked bad? Lots of teachers in WI are bartenders in the summer. I guess it even came up at a board meeting that it would be nice to have a sports bar in town. Gotta love small towns.

He gave me his first name and number, didn't want to give me his last name
As his ex wife who he is on good terms with works at the school, and he didn't want
There to be repercussions against her!! Haha that made me laugh. My wife actually agrees much more with him, tolerates my OC, has given up on talking me out of it, but thinks it's all my ego basically. She would NEVER allow something like this to effect the way she treated an employee. Probably the least political person I know, hates it. So, after I told her this story, she said call him! I ended up leaving a message, said it's a rumor and not true, he should talk to Randall about it and her door is always open as well. We will see.

Then he said You threatened one of my friends, to which I said WHAT!! There is a woman that walks a small dog down our street every day. We have a fenced in back yard, but my dog is in the front yard if I am. She could care less about people, but might run out in the street if there was a dog, and I don't quite trust her around really little dogs. If I open the gate she runs ahead around the house and if someone was walking down the street it's possible she would see them before me.

So, one day I saw this woman walking, put my dog in the fence and walked out to the street. I was armed OC. I said my dog won't hurt you, but she might run at you since you have a dog. If that happens and you pick your dog up she will be fine. She has never done this to anyone yet, but I'm trying to be proactive. All of our immediate neighbors have met our dog and either love her, or are indifferent. No dog poop with fenced in yard. No barking at night, always inside. Even the guy who doesn't really like dogs likes her because she is trained, and the amount of time I put into her.

So, this was considered a threat apparently. It's a small town, I knew I was the talk of the town at first. My first walk around I introduced myself to three people. The NEXT DAY I had 5 people say you must be the new DA's husband. Out of those 8, I think one mentioned the firearm. I've talked to probably 100-150 people in town on my dog walk. Maybe 10 mentioned the gun, and now 2 negatives.

I open carry with my dog into my bank every Monday for cash, into City Hall once a month to pay utilities. I do a three mile loop around town unless I get home too late. Our 11 year old 80 pound neighbor girl walks the dog 4 afternoons a week after school, which we pay for. She does not OC, but I do sometimes go along OC. This summer when we first moved here we went out every day together until I felt she was able to handle it on her own. She is a Hispanic girl, jet black hair. The nicest, most polite, most respectable young lady that you could imagine. Our dog loves her, and I joke somewhat seriously that she is stealing my dog! I've had several people mention we saw your daughter walking the dog.

alas Wstar425, me thinks you said it all by stating...

SMALL town

being raised in a small town where i might cause a spot of mischief on the other side of town, walk into my house an hour later to get beat or verbally assaulted but my dear mother and if the mischievous behaviour warranted, off on my bike to offer penance to whomever i offended, real or imagined.

ya...harper valley pta in real life.

better you than i

i do apologize to the august member from the cheese state who missed the subtle analogy referenced as there was no intent at obfuscation whatsoever.

oh and thanks for the suggested reading material..however, i believe a WHOLE lot of things have changed in this American society vs the olde world aristocracies European society of the end of 19th century.

Sounds to me like he is most likely a hard core anti trying to be nice.

I most likely would have told him sounds like a personnel problem.

As I smiled and told him to have a nice day.

Opening two paragraphs relevant to open carry discussion. The remainder of the post just another adventure tale containing very little relevant to open carry. Very boring and off topic for the Wisconsin forum.

Should have stopped reading after the second paragraph. Actually, there was no open carry involved, tho I am trying to be the best ambassador I can be. I even warned you the explanation was somewhat detailed. It's not my problem comprehension is not your strong suit. Didn't realize I was reaching thru the Interweb and forcing you to read, but now that I realize my powers you're pretty much doomed.

Short, unboring version: **** ***.

Apparently at least some are!

Wstar425, I enjoyed your story immensely - ALL OF IT.

I wouldn't call it a negative encounter as it seems the "rest of the story" has yet to be written, AND because although it started out negatively, it progressed to the point where you had an opportunity to engage in civil dialogue with someone who a) doesn't see things in the same way you do and b) who was willing to give you his contact information - giving you a chance to address something that troubles him. Both are big scores as far as I'm concerned.

Regardless of how things turn out, you're a fine OC ambassador in my book.

Thanks for your post.

Harper Valley was a country song, a film and a TV series that devolved to comedy based on unconventional behavior, not a description of small town conventions.

I recommend to himself alone Ferdinand Tönnies' 1885 Gemeineschaft und Gesellschaft translated 2001 as Community and Civil Society as it does a fine job of describing the origins of small town, Gemeineschaft convention and contrasting it with statutorily civil community.

Breviloquent!

It's the cabin fever.
At least, for most of us it's cabin fever.
Some (esp. the multi-personality troll) have always been that way & nothing will change them.

I liked it, all. Didn't mention if there was 4' of snow on the ground or not - living just down from the North Pole. Your OC did seem t/b reason for main theme of story.

Thanks!

We lost most of our snow, then go about 6-8 inches last week and now that is melting, global warming and all.

I never did hear back from Kent regarding my message about Randall's Super Club. There was a front page write up in the local paper regarding the opening of a
sports bar in town, and mention was made that Randall was no longer involved, but not why. Wife says health issues, I'll go with that until I hear differently. We have plans to eat there and check it out, but have not yet. I did stop there one afternoon with plans to eat, but not open. I did notice a computer printed post on the glass part of door saying no weapons of any kind allowed on premise. Not the legal red slash over gun pic.

Been mostly concealed due to temps on walkabouts, a couple of days I was able to wear a vest, but tucking a goose down vest behind holster looks almost too intentional or something, so I normally just cover and bottom half of holster is exposed. No comments .

Dog got a bath yesterday at the groomer. I stay as she is not fully trusting of the woman yet. I saw her notice firearm, but she never said anything. Had to clean and lube when I got home as I got spray from a couple of good shakes. Dog smells good again, was getting a pretty good funk about her.

I sure hope your dog didn't say anything about your firearm...[emoji251]

Something to tell the anti's.

I recently saw a sign that addresses the entire gun control issue very well.

"Legal U.S. gun owners have over 300 million guns and probably over a trillion rounds of ammo. Seriously folks, if we were the problem, you'd know it"..
And than there is this little tidbit. " trying to have a rational debate with an anti is like playing chess with a pigeon, they'll knock over all the pieces.. poop all over the board and then strut around like they won"..

My .02
