Great OC week

SoI have been OCing a lot more since I had the baby and especially since hubby is out of town for work. I am on maternity leave still so I spend a good portion of my day running errands. This week aloneI have been to Walmart like 4 times to pick up frames and scan pictures for my family tree project.

Well, last week went to DMV to replace lost drivers license, besides some MS13 looking guys telling me that "that's hot and "i like that" and staring at me no issues.

monday went to caribou coffee, guy sitting outside said "that things bigger than you" i said whats that, and he said that piece your carrying is bigger than you are. i smiled and replied thats nothing you should see the rifle i got at home. he laughed. saw him again yesterday, he smiled and nodded, nice guy. no problems at caribou.

Went to Walmart on Tuesday to scan some pics. I was waiting at the kiosk for new software to load and the tech ask if i need to carry my permit with me. not in a accusing tone but curious. i explain to her that in VA you don't need a permit to carry openly. She asked the difference between open and concealed. she seemed genuinely interested.

Wednesday at bloom in Lorton I was chatting with the seafood guy when one of his coworkers asked are you like a cop or something, i looked over my shoulder and said no. and the guy just kept walking. Another costumer came and talked with us for awhile about sports and that lead to kids with somehow led to kids shooting people to settle arguments and he looked at me and said "well i guess you're prepared for that" with a smile. I told him i try to be prepared for anything.

went to Walmart yesterday again as I walk in and go drop off my redbox movies this guy is checking me out. I walk past him pushing my month old daughter and he says " what are you doing carrying that big 9mil and makes a gun with his finger. I correct him and tell him its actually a .40. and he says "you look like such a sweet woman." to which i reply that I am. and he says im about to pop somebody. he's smiling the whole time and we chat about my baby and i tell him that if anyone tried to hurt her THEN i would 'pop" somebody. he was friendly and obviously just curious and didn't make too much of a big deal so i consider that a win. especially since the older woman behind him was smiling and laughing at our interaction. while I was scanning my pics this employee kept walking back and forth past me. i figured she was doing inventory or something she had a clipboard and another woman was pulling items off the shelves. At one point she got very close to me, making me uncomfortable, so i looked her in the eyes and smiled and said good morning. she didn't respond and i went about my business. A moment later she came back with a young man in a button up shirt and tie. Tag said assistant manager. I saw this coming so i took out my phone which has a record feature. She said "excuse me, do you have a permit to carry that" I said yes, but in virginia you don't need a permit to openly carry a firearm." her faced was incredulous. she looked at her manager and he said two words that made me smile inside "that's true" she deflated and stood there for a second, they walked away and she was already talking his ear off. I thought that was outstanding - no confrontation just... that's true! ha!

finally, on my way to 10-8 I stopped at the wendy's off exit 166. i went inside, again carrying my newborn. first thing i see if 4 VA state troopers. i nodded and smiled at one who returned the gesture. I went about my business moving through the line and moving the baby carrier through thy queue with no event. don't know if they didn't see or didn't care, but I consider a non-event a victory. when I sat down a guy behind me said, "that's one way to protect your baby" i replied "you know the saying, the most dangerous place is between a mother and her child" we chatted for a few minutes before i left. surprisingly, he's from MD.

these are just the places i went where there was interaction with other people. ive been everywhere this week with really no issues. all in all this past week has been a good week for oc for me. Hope that's a good sign!

Thanks for letting me share. Sorry so long, but at least its a positive post.

That's some good stuff Harper. I'm sure the baby helps keep conversations friendly and light.

Over the past 2 weeks I think I've had more comments on my openly carried firearm than in some years that I've open carried. Some comments simply spawned from several folks' desire to get a gun or buy more before the Obama presidency, some were just asking about the guns themselves and I had one lady at Sportsman's Warehouse in Roanoke ask me if I had or needed a permit to carry openly. I explained to her that in Virginia if you can legallyown a handgun you can carry it openly in most places without a permit and that those with a CHP could carry either openly or concealed in the capitol building as well. She stated that she was glad her husband didn't carry openly, so that gave me the opportunity to point out that if the firearm was carried in a place that served alcohol that he had to carry it openly to carry it legally. Before I left (I was in line checking out) I pointed out that although I have a permit to carry concealed I typically carried openly just because it gave me the opportunities to talk about carrying to folk like her. :)

That sounds like a wonderful week. Where are pics of the little one?

Contact OCDO member ed flyboyed@aol.comand ask him for some of his OC cards. Not only are they great sources of info you can give to folks, they can stimulate folks to get more info on OC and RKBA.

stay safe.

I don't know,I think this part of the story sounds a little fishy. We may need visual evidence.

Good report, Harper1227.

What is 10-8?
10-8 duty gear (or something like that) its a gun/tactical gear store on 611 - Backlick rd in Lorton. Unfortunately they were all out of the SIG556, seems they had a run on rifles in the past few days. hmmmm, go figure.

I was wondering what you meant by saying "I'm skilled" in reply to "nice gun"...LOL

I was on my lunch break. Its the only place within 10 miles to get something to eat and I like to go there just to get away and listen to Wilkow on the radio. I had my gun in my truck but was not OCing.

I think you were my first official spotting. I was pretty excited to finally see someone...especially a woman carrying a baby!!!!

:what:

I have yet to see anyone else carrying. we live right down the road and that wendy'sis halfway between our house and our doctor. Plus its often full of out of state plates from off the highway so we like to stop in as often as possible. we;ve gotten losts of dirty looks and :what:but no issues.

i dont know if the baby thing helps ease peoples minds but I think its definitely a shock sometimes. i don't think people expect it :)

Have you ever been able to determine which states the dirty looks came from? About a month ago, I helped out some people who were partially lost and looking for the best way to get onto 66 West. This was in Somerset (Gainesville) and they were from New York. They never blinked (that I could see) about my little friend on my side. Two older couples, perhaps retired.

ha! funny. i know at least one set of looks came from a couple from NY. one family that seemed shocked and appalled surprised me. he was disgusting with greasy hair and tats and piercings (which trust me im not knocking), she had funky colored hair and disheveled clothesand the kids - boy had a mohawk and dressed filthy, young girl was dressed like a tramp with short skirt and funky stockings and streaks of blue in her matted hair. I just thought 'and you're judging me?'

You got that right.

When parents let their kids dress any way they wish and do all manner of things to themselves, they are effectively telling them to "do your own thing". This is very bad when raising children. Limitations and parental controls are a must for a healthy climate in which a child can grow.

But that's not a gun topic so I'll escape it now. I have gotten the :what:from two Marylanders in an SUV who were gassing up in Gainesville while I was there, too. But that's about it.
