Okay everyone. I’m putting out some feelers here for a picnic in Grand Rapids sometime in July. There have been requests for this before, and it came up again at the K’zoo picnic today. So far I’m thinking some weekend in July, and would like input on what works best (I’ll make a final decision by next weekend). People should understand that there is a M&G on the 19, but other than that the month is open. I’m thinking it should be the same place as last year as that is a good spot. Then again, if more people show up, we may need more tables.

If any one has any suggestions or input, please post it. Last years picnic was at John Ball Park, and it would be nice to make it an annual thing. If anybody can volunteer to help out in any way, it would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

I'm in depending on the date. I want it as close to the PD lobby as we can. You know why.

In that case, we'll have to find a different park. I'll work on that. What dates work for you?

I am in and will help out and bring a round Charcoal Grill and hotdog buns, Don't know if they have a grill there but I don't like using them cuz people pee in them. I'm Thinking July 11 works best for me, but I will be there if its on July 4 or whenever. Here's my 2 cents. I think after the picnic we should go for a walk together downtown depending on the weather. I don't know if that would be to much for some people but that would be a really neat thing.

I just checked. The one park that is close to the police station does not have restrooms, or picnic tables.

One possibility might be the park adjacent to the Gerald R. Ford Museum.

That'd likely be my brother-in-law. He's named Gold152 on this forum.

Any July weekend after the 4th, except Saturdays the 11th and 25th (Internet talk show), but Sundays work.

Well, that leaves only the weekend of the 18th and 19th.

I said I'd wait untill this weekend before setting a final date, but having it on a day when the show isn't being aired does have the benifit of them being able to attend.

How does everyone feel about the 18th or 19th?

There is Richmond Park, but you might have to reserve it. Also Millennium Park, although that is a little out. There is also Lincoln Park on the West side, but I am not sure if they have a picnic area.

I think John Ball is the easiest to get to, just off I 196 (+ it's where it was held last year). If the PD is somehow on the agenda, it would be a looooong walk. The problem w/ the parks near the PD is that that it appears they are not really set up for a picnic. But, I can keep looking.;)

I do recall a post on here regarding Cascade Township banning firearms in the parks, as does the county. Perhaps it would be better to have it at a park that bans it; just push it a little perhaps.

But, my fear is just that we over analyze it; the "Paralysis of Analysis". Perhaps just pick one and go with it.

I don't really care where it's at. I just need to check out the PD lobby if you know what I mean.
:what: You might want to bring a change of clothes, toothbrush, and some spending money. (I'm sure eventually you would recoup by at least 6000x any money you would "need" to spend, though.;)

Which building is the PD in? What's the scoop on the park across the street?
The park across the street is Veteran's Memorial. It isn't suited for a picnic. No restrooms or picnic tables, and it's not near big enough. More of a memorial than a park really, with just a couple benches.

The next closest one that I now of is Heartside.

I don't know much about it, but last year when Furner was planning it he said that the only foot traffic there is from homeless people.

The next closest one that I know of is [size="+1"]Ah Nab Awen Park, and it is adjacent to the Gerald Ford Museum.

It's not as close as the others, but it's next to the museum, and a good hike would get you to the PD.

John Ball is county, but would probably have more foot traffic.

Oh, sorry, it's not in either one of those buildings. It used to be in "A", but they moved it to a new building about five years ago.

The new building is located at 01 Monroe Center NW. It on the corner of W. Fulton St. and Michigan Ave. It is between Monroe Center, and Louis St. (Monroe Center and Louis both intersect the corner of Michigan and Fulton at an angle)
