Got stopped today in lees summit

Well I was out walking today as I always do had some business at the gun shop a block from my house a cop pulls up to me and yells "dont shoot me" in a joking manor. ( he was trying to show me he was just making a contact) he said he got a call, and asked if he could talk to me, I told him yea but pointing up the road said over there out of the road, he said ok and met me at the spot, he said they got a call and he just had to check it out, ( now I have my toddler riding in a carrier on my back and my 6 yr old walking with me.) I told him no problem it been awhile since I got a call. He never asked for ID or anything, I gave him one of my cards for the shop ( I saw this as a good time to get the word in the PD that the gun shop is opening LOL) so we proceeded to BS about guns and the shop, and talked a little about OC and how they get the guys that give them problems, I told him I give the respect that I am given,that if he would have been like the Raytown cop that yelled at me, I would have been a pain in the butt, but his contact was perfect other than the bad joke.

Needless to say kudos to him, lees summit cops have been the best, they may get a little out of hand at time when they group up, but he handled it very well.

Great encounter. If a police officer makes the decision to make a contact rather than simply observing lawful behavior (which is the truly correct option), this is how that contact should go.

Talking to police on casual contact normalizes OC.

The don't talk to police rule, applies at "detention" for me.

Opinions vary, but kind words prior to stoving up can create a positive environment that never leads to the need and improves future contacts for other OC'ers IMHO, I could be dead wrong.

I agree with you, provided the encounter is truly a "casual contact." I.E.: "My, this sure is nice weather we're having," or "Do you think Team XYZ will make the playoffs this year?"

Speaking to me with the sole purpose of "checking out" my lawful behavior is not casual contact. A police officer is then acting in his capacity as one of the state's armed enforcers. His role in that capacity is to investigate behavior with the intent of building a case for prosecution. In that circumstance, he will be treated as a potential threat to my liberty, and reasonable precautions (such as discontinuing the conversation) will be employed.

Frankly, I'm getting annoyed with some peoples anti-leo attitudes. The cops have to respond to every call its their job. In St. Joe they are even required to respond to 911 calls that were explained as accidental dial or children playing with the phone even tho there is no indication of a crime. The cop in this situation had to make contact, but he immediately saw there was no crime. He made a pretty pathetic joke when he first arrived, he did not id Comsec, and he just had a casual conversation with him. I see no red flags there. This do not talk to cops attitude is exactly why OC is seen as such a problem because not talking to the cops is what criminals do. I know im gonna get a lot of argument about this but i have had plenty of encounters with the police, and being a dick only puts you on their radar. I had one bad encounter where i had to inform the cop he was wrong, but many of you also believe that it is wrong to drink and carry. That was the only time i ever had trouble and even then i was able to de-escalate it by cooperating and talking politely to the officer, so much so that when we finally got to the jailhouse i never seen the inside of a cell, and i was allowed to use my phone rather than being required to make a collect call. They have to do their job and you can choose how to handle it but talking to them is always the better option, silence makes you appear to be a criminal that has something to hide.

I agree with you Marc, I have done my fair share of stupid things to get attention. I have also learned that just doing the simple requests as an ID check and quick conversation will change a situation drastically. I have had many conversations with Lee Summit PD as a friend of mine lives in Greenwood. I do understand it can get out of hand sometimes, but honestly the officer was just doing his job on checking. The way he approached and spoke, I see no problem with how the officer did his business. I do enjoy a conversation with police officers who understand and are comfortable with citizens OC or CC. I had a 30 min conversation before with a LEO when I was open carrying and we also spoke about firearms and what we prefer. Were all human beings and that officer was just doing his job. Not to say there aren't any corrupted individuals out there, but something like this is just a friendly encounter.

Listen, I would LOVE to liaison with smart and engaging LEOs, and have done so in the past. It's partly the aching irony of having two groups who should be hand-in-glove harassing each other that makes this topic so hot.

Amazing. You call me anti-LEO because I correctly point out that the job of the modern LEO is to make arrests and build cases for prosecution, and that he should be treated with an appropriate amount of caution.

I cant see anything in the comments of that article that are relevant to this conversation. Yes there are bad cops, but for the most part they just do their job, and from what i seen there were several officers that have the same veiwpoints that article had nothing to do with simple contact with a leo though so what did miss that u saw?

This particular situation was handled very cordially. the article you just posted was not an official call, all calls to the com center have to be answered but some random complaint in public is not required to be responded to. Please learn how Law enforcement officers have to work before posting stuff that does not mean anything to this situation.

He did respond to the complaint in public! He observed the lawful activity, and moved on. That is how calls are handled in free places, too, by the way.

Please learn how non-jackboot law enforcement officers work before sticking your head in the sand.
