A golf club makes a crappy cane.

Does WA have any laws against carrying a weapon, as opposed to using a weapon? If so, how is "weapon" defined?

How come he is not planning to sue the guards who denied him water for 8 1/2 hours?

But my bottom line is it sounds like a really stupid way to deal with an old man walking along with an implement in his hand. (And none of the non-stupid ways I am thinking of require getting out of the relative safety of the car until the cane/golf club/implement has been put down and the person moved immediate reach of it.)

What the eff is up with people a) refusing to follow the relatively reasonable commands of a police officer and then b) demanding that a "supervisor" be called to the scene? ("Relatively reasonable" from our perspective, not the "officer safety" BS usually cited as the excuse for stupid cop behavior.)

stay safe.

Wowwie!!!

What the eff is up with people a) refusing to follow the relatively reasonable commands of a police officer

What the eff is up with cops a) demanding Law Abiding Citizens
refrain from perfectly normal civil and polite activities!!!

I can see no possible RAS to make any Demands,,
"relatively reasonable" is one step away from "paper please"

1 - what's up with the enlarged font size and bolding? Is it necessary to bellow?

2 - are you aware of the various reason given for carrying a golf club if you are not on the links/driving range? Most fall into the use of a weapon to protect against dogs/bad guys/interstellar aliens. So therefore there is a good possibility the cop saw the golf club as a weapon. And a golf club being carried as a weapon is IMO more unusual than the wearing of a gun and thus reasonable inquiry is not out of line.*

3 - BUT unless it was being used in some harmful way, we get back to the question of "is there a law against carrying a weapon?"

4 - Just which "perfectly normal and civil and polite activities" are you referring to?

5 - I agree that there was no RAS, based on the little information provided by the article. I also suggested that there were several other ways the officer could have handled the situation without needing to leave the relative safety of the car. I guess some people need to be told in so many words that I was strongly implying that the way the incident was handled was low to way off the bottom of the scale of "these are good ways to find out what's up with the golf club".

6 - please explain to me in short words just how "relatively reasonable" is one step away from "papers please".

stay safe.

* - just how twisted would your underoos be if the story was that the cop initiated a consensual contact inquiring as to why the old man was carrying a golf club? And especially if that consensual contact started with the cop still inside the car?

Well,,,

1 - what's up with the enlarged font size and bolding? Is it necessary to bellow?

Sorry for the font,, I wanted to bold your quote,,, then it just got out of hand,, ooops...

2 - are you aware of the various reason given for carrying a golf club if you are not on the links/driving range? Most fall into the use of a weapon to protect against dogs/bad guys/interstellar aliens. So therefore there is a good possibility the cop saw the golf club as a weapon. He was not Carrying it,, he was using it as a cane..
even a cane could be seen by a cop as a weapon,, maybe even an unusual one,, so what...
and still a walking stick seen as a weapon is not illegal and not ras..

3 - BUT unless it was being used in some harmful way, we get back to the question of "is there a law against carrying a weapon?"

NO!

4 - Just which "perfectly normal and civil and polite activities" are you referring to?

Perfectly normal and polite activities include what this nice man was doing,,,
Waiting on the corner, with his bag of groceries, leaning on his walking stick,
waiting for the crosswalk light to signal his turn to cross the street!

I read your post,, It gave the cop unlawful latitude to make demands of a citizen to divest himself
of the support he very well may have needed to stand there and be unlawfully detained!

6 - please explain to me in short words just how "relatively reasonable" is one step away from "papers please".

"Reasonable" is a huge weasel word used most by "mad moms for gun control",
it is akin to "for the children", "go along to get along", "im with the government and im here to help you"!

stay safe.

* - just how twisted would your underoos be if the story was that the cop initiated a consensual contact inquiring as to why the old man was carrying a golf club? And especially if that consensual contact started with the cop still inside the car?

my underroos would be just fine,,, if the cop had politly asked the guy why he used a golf club for a
walking stick,,, that would be both legal,, and polite,, and probably been the end of the whole fiasco!!

ooops,, I needed to add this "."

I think the cop saw him with a 'driver' and was just asking for a 'driver license'

Actually, don't know why she hassled the dude standing there w a golf club. Sure didn't see any reason to bug him. Maybe he was swinging the club and that is why she drove up on him like she had been there a minute ago.

There are several people in my area, that walk with golf clubs. Mostly to keep the dogs at bay. I don't think they get harassed , but that might be because they are Europe- American

Or it could be you live in Mayberry and not Seattle where the cops "kick the mexican piss" out of folks, shoot and kill harmless native wood carvers, beat severely black jay walkers, The surrounding areas are much better, in Tacoma a security camera caught a cop deliberately running over a man laying in the street, Palo's (a poster here) partner in Des Moines tracked and shot with gut shots first a harmless family pet cowering in the bushes in someones yard, I could go on and on and on just about how rotten the barrel is here in Washington State, Seattle being close to the rottenest part of that barrel.

What's the reason for that? Goes back to sailors? Bad political management? Hardly sunny? Would think liberal $15/hr living wage mindset would be squishy huggy.

naw'lll SVG washington state does not have the corner on those kinda of apples...
you could have the nice Gastonia LEs do a health/welfare check on your veteran, 75yo father or GF, that began with the first nice LE showing up at 2220L to no answer at the door. the next check was at 2330L when the nice police broke in through the back door and shot and killed your father or GF. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/incoming/article10422236.html

or your 17yo son or brother who's hands are handcuffed behind him inside a Durham patrol vehicle in front of the police substation and while the nice LE is away for a moment commits suicide by shooting himself in the head. http://www.wral.com/family-wants-fbi-probe-of-durham-pd-after-teen-s-death-/13206475/

sorry SVG mayberry lost its innocence also, many many years ago as andy and barney are long gone!! here the cotton is full of weevils

I'm sorry, a gold club is not a weapon unless it's presently being used as a weapon.

What exactly differentiates a walking stick or cane from a golf club with regards to their potential for use as a weapon?

Answer: nothing.

Do I have this right?....
A female police officer ensconced in 3700 lbs of Detroit steel is threatened by a septuagenarian with a golf club. He leaves no mark on her car or cracks in her windows.

After escaping with her life, she circles back to willingly place her life on the line and confront the old man who apparently doesn't appear to recognize that he threatened her earlier as he's calmly waiting to cross the road at the corner.

Oh that stuff happens here too. We even have nearby cities were rival groups shoot it out, and nothing happens to them. But for Maberry, the same people that owns the paper are the same ones that own the LE. The fact that the ones getting the beatings are Euroe-Americans, with a few south America- Americans mixed in there. Since not many AFRICAN-AMERICANS, (even if they have never been to Africa) no one ever hears about it

Sad isn't it? the whole barrel is rotten.

Those checks and balances the right to keep arms against this sort of tyranny just hasn't worked. They are not afraid of their masters.
