Hi!

We're currently living in WA, but it looks like there's a good chance I may be moved for work to the Greensboro/Burlington area in the next year or so, so I figured I'd put some feelers out about what things are like over there. We've got our concealed licenses here, which NC recognizes thankfully, but he's 95% OC and I'm at probably 35% (if it weren't for work, it would be quite a bit more). Is there anything we'll need to know, watch out for, anything like that? Or areas/stores?

If its posted no concealed weapons, you cant (legally) go in concealed. Open is ok, but you may be asked to leave. Do not carry in a place that serves alcohol. It is illegal to go into a bank concealed carrying. Open carry is legal in that instance. Felony to go onto educational property with a firearm. Misdemeanor with a BB gun. We also have a GATTTOTP common law:

By common law in North Carolina, it is unlawful for a person to arm himseWherself
with any unusual and dangerous weapon, for the purpose of terrifying others, and go about
on public highways in a marmer to cause terror to others. The N.C. Supreme Court states
that any gun is an unusual and dangerous weapon for purposes of this offense. Therefore,
persons are cautioned as to the areas they frequent with firearms.

This does not ban open carry. If you made a threat and the police found you with a weapon, you would be guilty of this crime. It is frequently abused law by Law enforcement officers. I would know, I'm pushing $5000 on my legal defense so far... pigs.

You will be fine here, just use common sense and you will not have a problem. Read here for the laws.

Welcome in advance!

Download the flyer from this state's sticky.

tCan is incorrect about bank CC. That became allowable last Dec 1st. They still have the option to post against. Wells Fargo allows both (they follow the laws of the state).

Here's a link to NC General Statute Chapter 14 (Criminal Law). The primary section begins at 14-269, then jumps around somewhat through 14-415.27. There are others but these will keep you going.

http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/statutes/StatutesTOC.pl?Chapter=0014

About the GATTTOTP: NC Supreme Court has also held that being armed is in itself not cause for police action; rather it is the intent of the individual and his actions that give rise to the charge. It may be threatened; it may result in charges and court action; but the state would still have to prove your intent.

You can also get individual city/county ordinances to get a feel for the community. It will usually be listed in the parks and recreation sections.

Thanks for the info guys, this is great. Hubby and I have been looking at quite a bit of different laws and such, but there's nothing better than hearing from feet on the ground. We'll probably be in Guilford county when we move, and it's looking like 6mo-1yr at this point before they'd move me, if it happens at all. I just don't want to finally say yes without having gotten a feel for the areas.

The concealed/open restrictions for private property are what get me. Here, they can request that you not carry, however, you can legally still go, and they can ask you to cover up or leave. It sounds like it's definitely a lot more OC oriented over there than here. People here are of the firm belief that "if I can't see it, it can't hurt me."

We are an OC state. GRNC (Grass Roots NC) and others are working to expand our carry rights with what I term the 'ninja technique': Get approval for CC, then down the road show that no harm has come from this and move to converting to CC/OC approval.

More nutshell: 1. NC recognizes OC as the norm for everyone, everywhere. Possession of ID not required; NC not a stop-and-ID state.:)
2. CC is by permit. Possession of permit and ID required; notification required if approached by LEO.
3. All businesses have the option of allowing or disallowing any form of carry.
4. Gun-buster signs must be conspicuous, but carry the weight of law. No size or wording requirements exist.
5. If not posted, a business can ask you to leave; if you do, no harm or foul. Trespass charge if you don't.
6. If you ignore a sign it can also be Trespass. At a minimum.
7. Most malls are posted. They may also have their own cops. These guys have the authority of real LEOs, without the professionalism.

In response to wabbit's furball: NC GS 74E-6. This is for mall corporation owned police agency.

you might want to mention the no carry in places that charge admission, no protests and no funerals.

mostly read the sticky's.

there is the castle doctrine here that is extended to you work place and your vehicle, no one can sue you for defending yourselves

there is concealed carry in state parks, and a bad law that we are fighting on the city levels

this is a good state to live in and has a lot of advantages

The funeral thing is a bit odd, but I can understand the others. The castle doctrine is GREAT though, ours here is just our home, it doesn't extend outside of that.

About the state parks thing though - does that also apply to federal parks? I know over here it's a bit sketchy on whether it's okay or not.

federal or national parks are good for CC or OC, thanks to president Soetoro (i think he said he wished he didn't have to do it). the law is to go by weather you are legal in the state you are in.

example; you are allowed to carry in the Smokey Mtn national park in NC but you have to have a CHL in TN. as of right now i am trying to think of other national parks the cross borders.

but another example is DC, where you are not allowed to carry. you can't carry there. or MD

Thanks, that's good to know. All of our federal parks here are well inside the state border. Our biggest worry here is Oregon or our crazy northern neighbors.. It sounds though that the biggest adjustment for us is going to be the posted signs for no concealed carry. Well, that and a massive lack of good coffee. That's going to be most painful I think.

I browsed through the postings and such for the state, but I didn't see anything about an OC meetup for the Greensboro/Burlington area. Is there currently anything set up?

That sounds fantastic! Unfortunately, I still won't know for another week or two if I'm actually being transferred over or not, or when I'd be going. It sounds though like it's about 80% right now, and I've got my fingers crossed!
