Family members of Philando Castile, a Minnesota man killed by police during a traffic stop Wednesday, told CNN on Thursday morning that he was a “law-abiding citizen” with a concealed carry permit. Not sure why he was shot.

Sad story all around on this one but without details, I'm trying not to judge in either direction. From what I understand, the cops weren't wearing body cams so it may be another "He said, She said" situation.

This link seems to be a transcript of the livestream.

Falcon Hights is about 1 mile from where I work and in fact I went to the U of M St Paul campus in the early 1980s.

I bring this up every so often, DO NOT keep ID information close to firearm. Do not tell officer you have a gun, this may be taken as a threat. Do keep ID, insurance, registration in a holder that can be placed that is visible, and no where near your gun. I always wear a shirt with a pocket, and keep that information in my shirt pocket, no where near my firearm.

Proper procedure for those states where ID is required keep hands on the wheel while telling officer you have a permit. Tell them where the permit/lic/information is before reaching for it. Wait for them to tell you to get it.

And always record, record, record, both voice, and video.

It would appear that the officer overreacted as the officer in SC did. I doubt that a LAC with no convictions, and a license was reaching for his gun. The officer in this case will probably not be charged, as he will claim he feared for his life. The taxpayer will pay a hefty sum for incompetence.

NC LEs know immediately when they run the plate if the registered owner has a CHP and they presume there are firearms.

OC'g different...

either way my 'paper' is kept over the visor and my hands remain on the steering wheel...

Visor is a good place, had the carrier in this case thought about being pulled over before it happened he might not been shot. I don't excuse the officer, but I would not carry my papers in my back pocket even IF I was unarmed.

I find it inexcusable that the chief holds a press conference where he can say: "I haven't seen the video yet, so no comment."

dup thread...

Except no one who ever know because the other one is just a teaser slogan instead of an actual and useful subject in the title. Makes it a lot harder to search for it later, too.

Another good idea is to join the NRA. Put their window sticker in your back window, driver side.

I dealt with police for a long time on a near daily basis. I have had many many many tell me that when they saw that sticker they were much more comfortable on a traffic stop.

Either way, when I get stopped (rarely happens) I have my DL and CCW cards in left hand between 2 fingers out the window, other hand on steering well before cop gets near my vehicle.

When the get CCW card they routinely ask and I advise yes. One recently asked if I was going to shoot him. I advised I only return fire, not initiate. That was the end of the conversation and no ticket though I was about 22 past posted.

I fully endorse joining the NRA, I have an NRA decal on my car, I do not believe it is proper or professional for a police officer to alter their treatment of a citizen based on what private groups they pay dues to.

Unless, of course, it's to the Fraternal Order of Police.

I cannot say for sure but do believe the NRA sticker had no influence on his decision to not cite me. Based on the limited information I posted you have no basis other than your own personal biases to make that decision either.

I fail to see how a NRA sticker could have prevented this shooting. The victim appears to have reached for something, and was shot. NO sticker would have saved him, such advise is nothing more than advertising for NRA. Using spilled blood to advertise for an organization is no better than mad mommies. The best course of action in a stop is to do absolutely nothing until told to do so. Sticking a hand out the window could be confused for a weapon, very poor advice.

At best we will agree to disagree.

How does one acquire credence (believability) or cachet (coolness) by claiming interaction with law enforcement public servants?

One does not acquire it. You can read my posts and give them the the credibility or lack thereof that you deem proper. Or you can not read them and just pass over or block or whatever you deem proper. I care not which you choose.

You will find if you take a I care not attitude here, you will be treated with respect to that attitude, which is no respect at all. Most of us have been here a long time, and we know what is credible, and what is not from long standing members. That respect is earned, even lack of respect is earned.

We can agree to disagree, but I was being kind when I did not outright laugh at your advice. People have been shot for doing exactly what you claim is appropriate. Most recent a young man shot with his wallet in his hand in SC.

so is this blue clown due to be sentenced to prison or will the apologist's say he just wanted to go home? This cop ****** up and murdered a man. I say lock him up. Having a liscense is not reason for concern. No more than my concern that the cops are armed. Same rules that we live under.
