Car dealership carry experience

I was expecting issues with the car dealers around. Most that I have seen are posted and if I was going to by a car I would have to do it their way:rolleyes:. Not really.

Background:

I needed to replace my daughters car (really mine, but she drives it). She is a college student (out of state) and the old car was getting to be very unreliable. So I did my research and came up with a few models to look at. I knew what I wanted so it was only a matter of where to buy.

The story:
I checked the thread (stores that infringe) for dealerships that are not carry neutral (posted no guns). Unfortunately, the dealers near me were on the list:cuss:. So I began looking for other dealers and found two that were not too far and weren’t listed.

My daughter and I hopped into the car and went shopping. As we pulled into the first dealer I scanned the doors for anything posted. We pulled up directly in front of the door and I saw nothing:D. Good so far, we got out and went in.

I should point out that I normally conceal, but on hot days I am more casual. The gun was covered by my un-tucked shirt, but the grip would significantly print if I was anything but standing perfectly straight. Keep in mind that I am 6 ft 2 in 180lbs so I can’t hide much.

We were greeted by a salesperson upon entry and went to look at the model on the floor inside the showroom. There, I had about 40 minutes of bending, reaching, stretching, twisting and maneuvering about the vehicle. I had to pull my shirt down several times just by habit. But I believe parts of the gun were visible more than once. No comments, no reaction, no notice at all that I could determine. Test drive went the same way.

Three days later we went back for a more critical look under similar circumstances. It was another hour and a half with no reaction at all. I’m starting to think everyone is blind, or I’m really good at casual concealing:confused:. We negotiate a successful deal with a trade-in.

Two more days and we go back to pick up the car and complete all of the required paperwork. When all was said and done, they ask if I had any comments. I mentioned that the dealer that was closest to me was posted and that I would prefer to work with someone who doesn’t restrict firearms. Since I carry most of the time this would cause problems for buying or future service. I explained that this is what brought me in the dealership originally and that I was pleased that they were not posted. The salesperson (she) looked at me a bit puzzled and said “Why would we care? Most of the guys here are gun people. We wouldn’t have any problem with that.”

I was really expecting more of a reaction. What a pleasant surprise. I thought it was worth mentioning Braeger Ford, 4201 S. 27[SUP]th[/SUP] Street in Milwaukee. For some reason a majority of dealerships in SE WI seem to be posted. Maybe I just haven't looked enough.
I’ve tried to keep my story to the gun related issue. Sorry about the lengthy story. If you want more info on the car deal, just PM me as I don’t want to clog up the forum with that.

Feels good to vote with the almighty dollar... or even several thousand of them. I'm glad I had a choice of dealers and found a good one.

Thanks for the story.

I would think that most car dealerships wouldn't post because they do whatever they can to get your business. All car dealerships go to extreme lengths to get business because of the way the economy is so by not posting they're allowing more business in. Thats just my theory. Glad everything went so smooth.

Carry on!

I used to think of things as good or bad

but i have learned there is good , bad and Neutral

there are people who feel they need to push their will , their views of every issue on you

but most people just want to do their work and go home at the end of the day to do what they enjoy

so long as what you do doesn't interfere with what they want to do or their lively hood then they are happy to leave you alone

the live and let live , way of life

glad you had a good experience buying a car and carrying , you will find your comfort with carry grows the more you carry around people and have neutral experiences the less you will tug at your shirt.

Very true indeed...

As somewhat of a newbie, I have found this to be very true. I started as being very self concious of visibility. Stopping to check my clothes and fidgeting with everything.
Now I have become more casual and less worried if someone will notice. It's a process that we all go through because of the way society (public schools) programmed us. I still have a way to go. For anyone reading, the Starbucks meet is a great way to help with this. I'm sure the other outings will too. You carry, and are around others doing the same, so it is kind of a safe start to build your comfort level.

Most people are oblivious to the obvious, I've ony had one noticable reaction. I came to work on a Sunday (industrial plant) and saw a car parked in the back of the lot, in a partially obscured area. Pulled up and got out to see who was on my private property. With a loose shirt and an OWB holster it was hard not to notice. The two occupants were in the back seat (male & female). She did all the talking and he said nothing. Brief conversation, they left and I went to work. Interestingly, as she talked to me she was staring at my right hip:uhoh:. I then realized that my holstered XD was perfectly outlined. I now understand how some women feel when you don't talk to their face:lol:.

After thinking about the conversation and the totality of the circumstances, I think she was working and I interrupted. Oh well, no refunds.

Good for you for finding a friendly dealership.
If it were me, I'd be tempted to send the closer dealers a copy of the receipt & a letter explaining exactly why they lost that business.

That was you!?

I wouldn't have recognized you with that hoodie on:dude:! (see your avatar). You needed the official symbol of Gun Nutz... two hanguns (or a facsimile therof) connected by a string and hanging over your trailer hitch. Then I would have left you alone!!!
Note sure how to quote multiples here so....

I have been thinking about how to redact a document for this purpose. I don't want to give up any information not needed to make my point. Private means private. Can we add an eigth day to the week??? Preferebly a weekend day.

I think I heard McX scream. :p

So that is what I heard here in Utah.

On topic, the dealerships here in UT are very gun friendly. I will be teaching a Utah Concealed Firearms Permit Class to the Corvette Club of Utah on 9-1-12 at one of the local Chevrolet dealerships.
