I am planning a trip to Cali.
I have been researching gun laws. Wow, what a mess.
It appears to be impossible to own a gun and be in complete compliance.
I bought a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 .40 for backpacking.
The wilderness area I will be visiting is full of Bears and Mountain Lions.

My question is, Sub 2000, assault rifle ( a therefore banned ) or legal ?

As far as I can tell, only .22's and western style long guns are NOT assault
weapons.

What's the overall length of it while in the shortest configuration in which it may still be fired?

Follow this flowchart.
http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf

This is the most vetted method for CA AW identification (for rifles. There are separate charts for handguns and shotguns)

I just did some quickie research and it appears that your rifle is indeed considered an Assault Weapon in CA law.

1) Overall Length in a fire-able condition is 29.5 inches. That .5 inch too short. The rifle must be no shorter then 30"
To eliminate this, you will need a half-inch extension somewhere.

2) It has a pistol grip
In order for a semi-automatic center-fire rifle to have a pistol grip, the magazine must be 'locked' to the gun (i.e. it must require a "tool" to remove the magazine) Having the magazine locked will 'allow' you to have 'evil features' such-as the pistol grip.

HOWEVER - locking the magazine in does NOT eliminate the overall minimum length requirement.

Additionally; bringing magazines into CA which hold 11+ rounds is illegal unless you possessed them in CA prior to 1/1/00 (PC12020)
You may bring them in if broken down as parts, but not as functioning magazines. There are other exemptions for the mags; you can look at the Penal Code here: http://leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html

Thank you MJones. Yes, it is actually, 29.25 inches.

Really, one screw to lock in a mag w/10 rounds available. And 1 inch butt stock
extension and I'm game. ? Cool.

Lot of homework to do. Thanks for the help.
