They are all intertwined in some way or another.  The difference of "nigger" is that it started out as a derogatory term.

Wasn't "redneck" initially a derogatory term back in the 1800s? I thought black minstrels used it to show how slaves lived a better life than poor white people. Anyways, it's a pretty positive word today thanks to Jeff Foxworthy and the Blue Collar Comedy guys, IMO.

Doubt it. On another occassion, just after those OC'ers brought the rifles to the health care rally, we had a similar conversation.  He and another woman in that conversation just didn't understand what would make people do something that "stupid". I tried to explain expression of rights, etc. and that led to self defense... She said that crimes don't really 'happen around here' and that 'it' (self defense) can't happen 'that often' .  I told them they both need to read the news more often and check out self defense blogs. He said something to the extent that you can swing it which ever way you want depending on what you read.

It all goes back to us just being a bunch of scared rednecks. But, like I said, he's a very intelligent guy so it would be interesting to see him debate the whole forum. But being the minority he might not feel too comfortable and probably just end up being labled a troll.

What you cannot "swing it whichever way you want" is the COUNTY CRIME REPORT.

Fairfax County releases spreadsheets of crime. Download the last year for your county and make a listing that excludes traffic citations.

It's VERY eye opening.

Check this wonderful crime map. There was a shooting in my area this summer!!! Assaults, burgleries and robberies...right here where "that sort of thing doesn't happen"!!!!

That's certainly the definition I would claim if I trusted everything I read on Wikipedia.

It was intended to describe the necks of poorer rural dwellers during the post-reconstruction era, but it was not taken as an insult by them, though it may have been intended as one by carpetbagging yankees and their ilk.

How we took it was that it meant we actually EARNED our day's wages through honest labor. To any good Southron that's much more badge of honour than wearing a Wall Street suit and tie every day, making a living off of speculating on the successes and failures of other people's enterprises.

And that spirit lives on today. Foxworthy simply retooled it in order to cement his place in the annals of one-note-jokedom.

This is true.

But I can assure you, and I know you already know this, that a large segment of the country, and some southerners included, use this term in a denigrating manner. This is fed by the entertainment industry in large part. Just look at how southern people, males in particular, are portrayed in movies and on TV. More often than not, we are shown to be barely capable of holding a spoon, let along understanding quantum physics.

I guess that's what really gets to me.

Won't they be surprised when they discover we even have opposable thumbs!

Most TRUE southerners understand how the term "redneck" was derived and, much like the flags of our country, cannot be denigrated by someone else's ignorance or attempts to hijack it for use as a derogatory insult.
Sir, I am also a TRUE Southerner and was merely suggesting care in its use. Its roots are not all that different than those for the other term, although the 'N' word stems from pronunciation variances. While both have foundations in relative innocence, they have come to represent denigration and vulgarity when used in more contemporary discourse.

However, I do agree with your statement. The part about all of this which I have a problem with is why it seems to be acceptable for one term to be used, while the other is to be shunned at all costs. I see that as disinguenuous and a bit racist. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
If you question the intent/meaning of my verbiage, listen carefully to the tone of my voice and observe the expression upon my face. These will delineate more precisely my expressed opinions.

Especially useful here on OCDO where a few occasionally miss the nuances of the message. :p

It also helps in striking the vitals of those that already have large holes in them but are still attempting to stand upright. :)

Are you saying that H1227's co-worker is stupid?

If so, why?

I would lean toward the same conclusion. Why? Based on what we have been told (an important caveat), their opinion is based on a mixture of flawed assumptions, generalizations based on prejudice, a series of logical fallacies, and some just plain ignorance, and they seem resistant to having any of that corrected. If that doesn't qualify as "stupid", I am not sure what does.

Just a few comments..

- His mind is made up

- His arguments are emotionally based

- His ignorance is not a virtue

- A great example of the genuine power of the media

- Just let it be and let him continue to go about his business as a good little serf.

on a side note. yesterday i went to lunch with another co-worker. friend of a friend really. same company, different office. but, we were both in the same long meeting so afterward we grabbed some chow. we took my car.he was bitching (as we tend to do) about his office and how he works with a 'bunch of conservatives' ( i dont know, maybe i "look' liberal) and one guy was all mad cause he couldnt get a license to conceal a gun. i told him i had one myself. he said he didnt mind guns and could see if he wanted to go hunting but where would you go hunting in a city... He was a nice enough guy and we had a good exchange about rights and self defense. but i didnt have the heart to tell him that when he first sat down in my passanger seat he had a gun between his feet.

Dont know, didnt go into it. i think it may have specifically been an issue of taking it to work. bc exactly what the guy said was he was pissed he couldn't get a concealed carry license to bring his gun to work. So he may work at a building on fed property. at which point it really wouldnt matter if he had one or not.

anybody been bitching at work lately?

I got laid off last month, so I can bitch all I want. We knew it was coming for the last two years - project moved into a maintenance and support mode and I was a developer. Figured this is as good as an excuse as any to start the retirement phase.

I worked with some real good people there. Some would surprise you that they had a permit and were into guns. We hired one lady in the spring who was the quiet and demur sort as well as nice looking. Come to find out, she has her permit, is big into guns, has a great sense of humor and personality, and lives in my development.

Some others really surprised me, too. You just never know.

I'm sure she probably is. I know she's single, but I have no idea if she has someone in her life. She's just a very nice and pleasant person to know and be around. And for the record, she is quite conservative. And she wasn't the only lady like that where I worked. A few others were along that same mold - with looks to boot.

One of them was into reenactments and loves to shoot both handguns and rifles. She is particularly fond of Nagants, AR15's, and I believe 1911's. But she's got a boyfriend.

I have to tell you, they were all fun to work with and we still stay in touch.
