Anniversary trip with the wife to Honolulu, and I feel naked without my firearm :(

Greetings to the residents of Hawaii. I am on vacation with the wife here in Honolulu for our 2nd wedding anniversary. When we leave next week it will have been the longest I have went without carrying my firearm in well over a decade.

I am a resident of Michigan and have a CPL but since Hawaii does not honor MI CPLs and to the best of my understanding of your laws OC is illegal here I left my firearm back in Detroit.

My question is does anyone carry in this state besides LEOs? Having had several conversations with people here, they all have the "Deer in the headlights" look when I tell them I carry a firearm back home on a daily basis. "Really?", "Why?" and "No way?" have been a common response.

I guess I am guilty to a certain extent of taking for granted the rights we have back home (As confusing as our laws are, we still can OC without a CPL).

I believe MI recognizes a Hawaii carry permit (Does anyone actually have one of these?) The mere fact I am not carrying as I usually do has left me feeling naked. Not familiar with the political affairs here, is there any hope of these Draconian laws changing?

Hawaii does have open carry and concealed carry permits that are valid county wide. No concealed carry permits are currently active.

Hawaii is the only state where it is illegal statewide to walk around in public with a rifle or shotgun. If you bring a gun to Hawaii, you must register it and you can not drive around with a gun in transport mode, not a rifle, pistol, or a shotgun... Not even ammo.

You must drive straight to the range, residence, police station, or your place of business without stopping.

Hawaii's gun laws are horrible and they were basically written by the military. They were made worse in the 1970's and again in the early 1990's.

Hawaii never had a gun culture and historically is very anti-gun. That is changing with the younger generation and gun ownership has tripled what it was 15 years ago.

I really wish you could carry a weapon in Hawaii but I'm afraid it's not possible. I carried a handgun in Hawaii and I can honestly say I really didn't feel like I needed it (but I wish you had to option to carry it).

I only carried in Honolulu half of the time I was there. The only time I ever felt I wish I had a gun with me in Hawaii when I didn't was at Alele Falls outside of Kaupo in Maui. There was a wild dog who was very curious and I had to be persistent to get him away from my wife and I.

Back to Honolulu, The far west side of the island (tent city) is pretty ghetto and China Town is not the best place to be at night.

Compared to Flint and Detroit, Honolulu is a crime free area :)

I hope you find this information helpful and I recommend you go on Amazon and buy Oahu Revealed by Wizard Publications. They gave me so much great information on places to hike and eat at.

Said like a true breathless haole tourist.

All of our lessons about cop interactions doubly apply to county cops in Hawaii. They're very effective against kama'aina thugs, it takes one to know one.

No need for racism. I doubt you would dare to refer to a black person as a n**ger on this forum, right?

And yes, those books are great. The last think I wanted to do was pay local hacks to show me how to get to public land. People don't like those books because they don't understand capitalism.

And yes, I will always be a tourist in Hawaii, and California... Actually, for any non class 3 state where the gun laws suck. I'll take Michigan where I can buy 30round mags for my M4 with "evil features" with no hassle... Now you will have to excuse me as I look at handguns that are not on the commie-fornia sale roster. :)

Ignorance.

Haole does not = the N word.

Unlike the N word it doesn't have it's origin in hate and bigotry.

It simply referred to the fact that when Europeans arrived they didn't kiss the ground after getting off the boats as the Hawaiians traditionally did.

I am mostly haole, and as a local haole when I was there I was never offended by the word, you can tell when people are bigots or are just using it as a descriptive word to tell you apart from the majority of others there.

Hawaii has a CC law on the books, but statistically, it's easier to get a permit in New Jersey, NYC, Maryland, and Massachusetts than it is to get one there. I remember reading on the old CC site, packing.org, that there is no record of anyone except one civilian police department employee ever having received a carry permit there.

I have a few friends that have CC and they are not law enforcement. They do have a job with a large local bank as armed guards.

Do you mean open carry permits? According to the people at 2aHawaii, FOIA request efforts revealed that zero cc permits were active in any county for anyone.

We disagree on that, but it's not ignorance. It does have racist overtones. Cook's men didnt kiss the ground, just as blacks used to pick cotton on plantations... both are historically accurate; however, I imagine it would be viewed as racist to refer to blacks as cotton pickers.

Hawaii is a de facto no issue state. Just know if you want to try to apply for a nonresident permit while you're there, you WILL be denied. Hawaii is a tropical haven for collectivists; I would avoid it at all costs for all future vacations. If tropical weather is what you want in a vacation destination, go to Florida.

I am living in Hawaii and.. Haole (if you could not tell by my moniker) and regarding haole being offensive.. many people do think it is. I was born and raised here... So guess I am pretty used to it. Typically it is more commonly coupled with a offensive word such as "stupid haole" or "fu**ing haole" which admittedly does have a nice ring to it much like how in Maine we call people from Massachusetts "massholes"

Anyway, Yes, in this state we apply to be denied. There is a court case against the honolulu police chief, the state of hawaii and I believe also the governor, awaiting decision, From a guy named Chris Baker (Baker v. Kealoha) Hopefully this will help us get to a position to carry. I submitted my application a couple weeks ago and have not heard anything back yet for a carry permit on the big island. I figure I cant complain that I am not allowed to carry if I did not apply.

Do I feel the need to carry? Honestly with the laws here it might be scary to carry. You basically have to run out of your own house if someone comes in. At the same time this is not the same world it was. When you feel safe is when you become complacent. I bet those kids at that school felt pretty safe. We all know how that turned out. I prefer to be prepared for anything.

Sigh....are you white and sensitive? Were whites ever slaves in Hawaii? Did that term refer to that.....political over polite correctness......is bullshite.....

Yep you can always tell when it's meant to be derogative.

.

Am I white and sensitive? WOW, you seem pretty racist to me. Thats common for collectivist who wish to view people in groups. I doubt you would be brave enough to go to Compton and scream cotton pickers, but since you conveniently ignored that from my last post i'll leave that alone.

I don't view people as groups and I can give two craps about who was enslaved in Hawaii or anywhere else in the world, I live in the present, not a hundred years in the past.

Hawaii is beautiful, but it is a welfare pit... And I'm glad that it's no hassle for me to carry a firearm in Hawaii.

Sigh......and you ignored my original post about the term haole not being born out of hatred........

Me a collectivist? Hahahahahahahahahahaha that's just damn right funny and shows you have paid no attention to my posts

Me as a racist? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha again no attention to my posts and totally ignorant about me my family and my beliefs.

No I would not go yell cotton pickers in Compton or will not use that term or the N word with my family and friends that are black, because those words are born in hate....haole was not. My step son who is 1/2 black, 1/4 asian, 1/4 polynesian got a lecture not long ago from me about using the N term even in jest with his friends, not allowed in my house.

Did you not find many local friends in Hawaii?

LOL, I don't follow any posters. Maybe Mike and John could have an opencarry.org twitter type of program so we can follow.

I don't live in Hawaii, I don't have friends there.... I do in South Africa if that counts for anything :)

LOL....yea I don't need followers bad wording on my part, if you read any of my posts in my state Forum or in the the Open Forums....you'll find I am far from a "collectivist".

The only people I met from South Africa are white.....

Have you lived in Hawaii? I am just saying if you did and have friends or family like I do you would find that haole isn't necessarily a bad word.

I would like to live in HI, but the wife would not like it. I've been to all the islands except the big island (Kauai in a couple of months).

Maybe when I'm retired I can convince her to move... But who knows, all depends on family situations.

Ideally I would rather live in NH and buy a condo in HI that I could rent out for the months I wouldn't be there, but the logistics of that are very complicated and much harder than people realize.

You never told me you were a racist, Damn that is the funniest thing anyone has ever accused you of on OCDO.
