I need some advice. I recently purchased a Kimber 1911 Ultra. I took it to the indoor range yesterday for the first time. The range where I purchased the gun sold me (SPEER LAWMAN 45 AUTO 230 GR GOLD DOT HP). I loaded 3 magazines 7 shots ea. Upon racking the first round I noticed that it took two times to actually get the round in the chamber. I pulled the trigger bullet went down range , slide came back and stopped. It would not load the 2nd round. After talking with the range instructor he advised trying different ammo. I purchased a box of LELLIER & BELLOT FMJ RN .45.

The ammo worked perfect.

Since I am new to 1911's could someone suggest what type of target indoor range ammo to buy and what brand of duty ammo.

The range instructor suggested I purchase Winchester .45 silvertip.

If you could lead me to the correct site I would appreciate it.

1911's are notorious for not liking all JHP ammo, especially when they are new.

I suggest that you shoot several hundred rounds of ball ammo, (FMJ) through your gun BEFORE you try any JHP.

I carry Winchester 230 grain JHP because they are nearest in shape to the ball ammo I practice with, and I have never had a problem with them.

If the problem persists, take the gun back to your dealer and have him check it out.

I have a .357 Magnum revolver that doesn't like Sellier & Bellot ammo. go figure.

No.

Don't get caught up in names and hype.

The truth is that at handgun velocities no JHP ammunition can boast 100% expansion.

FMJ or Ball ammo, in .45 ACP has been around for over almost 100 years and has been very effective in stopping threats.

It was the primary US handgun ammo of WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. It is a proven stopper.

There are 2 reasons to use JHP ammo.

1. If it expands it makes a bigger hole and in stopping bad guys, bigger is better.

2. An expanding bullet is less-likely to exit the bad guy and hit someone you don't want to stop.

In a .45, if you can't use JHP ammo, and some .45's just won't feed JHP's, then you still have a very good round to stop Bad guys with.

Most of the Hyped up gimmick rounds that are advertised, are so that you will buy expensive ammo that is said to be newer and better.

I have heard it said by more than one source that more people are killed in the US every year by .22 LR than any other round. I am NOT advocating the use of a .22 for personal protection, I am only pointing out that if a .22 can kill, and it almost killed Reagan, then any .45 can stop a bad guy. It must feed or you are out of luck when it comes to stopping a bad guy.

The best gee whiz ammo in the world is no good if it won't work in your gun.

You must practice, practice, practice so that you can hit what you aim at and be ready to defend yourself and your family.

For the love of GOD stay away from caliber's. Their prices are outrageous and it seems to me they dooped you with the ammo. Selling you SD ammo instead of some cheap (still outragously expensive at their prices) target ammo, just to get you to buy both in the end. Do yourself a favor, cut your losses and go to wal-mart and get some cheap ammo like winchester white box. Then if you have a truck go out to the mesa and shoot for free instead of a 20$ range fee and 40$ in ammo. If not the city has a range too and its only like $5 to shoot.

which range are you talking about at the moment I'm stuck going to calibers as i need to rent a handgun at the moment (need to be a resident waiting on FBI clearence :banghead: ) before i can get my own

One of the last two Kimber 1911's I purchased (in Nov) is an Ultra, and it has been back to Kimber twice now. UPS tried to deliver it yesterday after its second trip back, so I don't know how it will perform yet. It has about 600 rounds of FMJ through it to date.

Funny you mentioned it. I called Kimber yesterday detailing the problem i am having with my new Ultra CDP II. I have tried 3 diff: types of ammo and the problem i m having is the slide, locks back and fails to chamber a round while there are still rounds in the magazine.

Kimber is sending me a new Slide Stop. They say this will solve the problem. I have only put65 rounds through it but the problem still occurs with Ball ammo and Blazer # 3570.

My problem was a little different with an Eclipse Ultra, just jamming about every 10 rounds while trying to feed, but they replaced the slide stop the first time, along with the spring, polished some stuff, etc. But it still didn't work.
