So I was reading up on the P239 and it seems like it would be a nice choice for a first but I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on any other firearms ..

SIGs are known for being mechanically sound and reliable firearms. Your best bet would be to test fire one if possible or at least try to handle one and see how it fits your hand.

You know, the only thing that really matters, is what caliber is best for self defense.

HK USP Compact is my main carry. They only reason I got rid of my last HK was to finance the current one.But, it's damn near impossible to go wrong with a Sig.

It's the perfect carry weapon, it lacks the "hard edges" of a tac-rail and the square-ish trigger guard the other ones have.. For small hands, it's a better fit than the P229, although it's a single-stack magazine.. --8 rounds by default,there is a 10-round magazine which protrudes an extra inch(approx)

The *ONLY* reason to get the P229 over the P239 is more rounds and the tac-rail

It's a great gun, a great concealed carry gun. I have owned one in the past and was sad to part with it. Be advised it is a little heavier then it's polymer framed counterparts.

If you get a Sig P239 I do have an extra P239 magazinethat you can have. When I sold my P239 to financemy new P229 .40 cal. Equinox, I forgotabout the3rd magazine that I had left in my closet.So if you decide to get the Sig P239 let me know because I hate to see a perfectly good quality magazine go to waste.The Sig P239 isa nice gun and I had no complaints. FYI, I'll have to miss the April VCDL meeting because I'll be in Florida for a few daysbut will be at the May VCDL meeting. Otherwise we could meet up at another OC gathering (somewhere other than Tony's) and I could give it to you.

Well my husband has a 229 .40cal and I've fired that at the NRA range and up in the mountains. So I know it fits nicely in my hand and what not. Only problem when firing is that I anticipate the recoil and tend to shoot to the right :lol: I know I'd prefer a Sig, seeing as I've already handled one and like it. I just don't want the same one as my husband, but also I'd prefer something with a little less of a recoil.

Maybe a smaller caliber? Is a 9mm still a good defense round?

9mm is good enough, I prefer .40 but a hit with a 9mm beats a miss with a .40. Being that you are familiar with SIGs I'd say go for the 239 in 9mm.
