Man shoots his way out of sinking SUV
He crashed into creek after being startled by cell phone

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - A driver whose SUV plunged into a Northern California creek after he was startled by his hands-free cell phone device escaped the sinking vehicle by blasting out the window with a handgun.

The 28-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately available, is an armed security guard at Thunder Valley Casino, north of Sacramento. He sustained minor injuries in Sunday's accident.

A spokesman for the Roseville Fire Department said the man was traveling northbound on Industrial Avenue in Roseville when the cell phone device activated. The driver was startled and veered off the road through the guardrail. The SUV landed in Pleasant Grove Creek.

He used his gun to shoot himself out, then flagged down a passerby.

Sure, a another good reason to have a gun in the car. I can agree with that, this case reminded me though of the three softball players from Dickinson State drove right into a pond and all drowned in 10 feet of water. A damn shame and it twisted me a bit, sad sad way to go.

A good reason to have a gun in the car? Sure, but first, it is a good reason to bloody pay attention to the road first.

Doesn't anyone else notice the glaring qualification the press always needs to add as a justification?



The fact that it wasan armed security guard....

...or an off duty police officer.....

...or a former police captain.....

...or a National Guard Sergeant...

.....is always prominently mentioned first in any article noting a benefiial use of a firearm. We normal, everyday, common citizens probably would have received NO benefit to carrying a firearm. Only armed security guards, or off duty police officers are allowed to have their lives saved by them. The rest of us are SOL because firearms are bad.

Whenever I see an article with a favorable outcome after using a firearm, it always contains the qualification of the person mentioned as soon as possible. It has become so obvious to me, it's almost as if the article read like this:

He is not acommon citizen, andhas carried a dangerous firearm for many years and has received extensive training. Unlike regular citizens, the use of a firearm is accepted for him. You should not possess a firearm unless you have as much experience as this unidentified man.

This reminds me of the IT Crowd episode, "Return of the Golden Child." Roy buys a new mobile phone with lots of features but, finding himself disappointed by the weak vibrate setting, he allows Moss to “pimp your phone, girlfriend”. What's funny is that it doesn't matter what he told police, his insurance is going to give him a colonoscopy wide awake and without any pain killers.

I am with S-V on this one, was this guy that jumpy in every other situation? What would he do if someonesnuck up behind him and said "Boo!"

I have been startled bya pager that was set on vibrate while it was in my shirt pocket, but I got stung by a bee while driving the day before and I had reason to be concerned when I felt something like that. But I didn't even deviate from my lane.

I wonder if they guy filled his shorts when the phone rang too?

Break News!
Today a man drove his vehicle into a local city reservoir after his cell phone, set to vibrate and play a song on the loudest volume setting, was disturbed when his phone rang and a Lady Gagga song came blaring into his ear via his bluetooth ear piece. After being violently startled, the man fumbled his phone and it ended up in his lap where it proceeded to vibrate. This unfortunate series of events lead to the driver losing control of his vehicle, cutting across three lanes of morning rush hour traffic, and ended up in the reservoir around 8am this morning. The man was then trapped in his vehicle, luckily he was a security guard and had his service pistol which allowed him to blow out a window and swim to safety. The phone was not recovered. Police say the man will be charged with reckless driving, use of a cellphone resulting in a vehicle accident, and willful discharge of a firearm in city limits.
