The Retro Diner
4110 Colley Avenue

Google Maps

1) [strike]Sorry this is not what most would consider walking distance from campus.[/strike] If you don't have a bike, or you want/need a ride, send me a PM. I would like to have this at one of the places on Monarch Way, but it is not absolutely clear to me that student policy does not apply in those establishments. I have open carried there many, many times without a problem - even with Norfolk and ODU police present, but I don't want to open up anybody to trouble with the school without being positive.

2) This is during activity hour which is the only time I KNOW students won't have class.

3) Most things on the menu can be had for ~[strike]$5[/strike] $7 + drink

4) Non-students welcome (of course)

E-mail her and ask her. She's there and I'm in Yorktown. I don't know her schedule. Good luck with that. She's a busy girl. I don't want to be her social secretary and screw up her schedule.

Thanks, tj

Dog 'n' Burger lies about 100 feet from Blair Middle School property. Any GFZA issues to be concerned about?

Well that's a little annoying. I forgot about that place. I thought nobody even knew of it being enforced anywhere in Virginia by itself.

One OC walking down the street next to the school yard probably is not noticed.
A pro-OC event 100 feet away in the middle of a school day might attract a little more attention. May even be Blair students/faculty in the Dog 'n' Burger at that time for lunch. Remember, this is the NPD we are talking about, here.

This is groundbreaking TJ. Get pictures, just go easy on faces. The school will be watching.

If you find that you must change the venue, you might consider:

Tanners Creek Restaurant
5103 Colley AvenueNorfolk, VA 23508-2041
(757) 423-2430

It is much closer to ODU; great seafood. Don't know their OC/CC policy.

... or:
O'Sullivan's Wharf
Retro Diner
Enrico's
Fellini's
University Pizza

... all on Colley Ave and north of 38th Street, all near ODU.

Meh what about one better:
Del Vecchios
1080 West 47th Street, Norfolk, VA 23508-1901

There's not a lot of seating (especially during lunch) but it's about as close as you can get and still be off campus. While many of the places you listed are nice (just ate at Enrico's last night), I'm thinking some are probably not suitable for a college student budget. There's also something to be said for a quick service as class starts up again at 1:30. I've never eaten at Retro Diner, I'll check that out for lunch today.

Thundar, I hope you won't mind a change in venue?

That works well. Didn't know they were behind Copytron. Last saw them on Granby near Fed courthouse.

Since we seem to prowl the same ground, I look forward to our meeting.

Likewise. You'll be attending then?

Just got back from Retro Diner - I quite like the place. Owner's Son was pretty friendly. Spoke with him a while and he got to mentioning that ever since the restaurant smoking ban, business has been slow. Anyway, he's more than willing to accommodate a group and there are no ridiculous and unconstitutional criminal protection zones that I know of which would interfere.

So:

New Venue is
The Retro Diner 4110 Colley Avenue at 12:45pm on Tuesday 09/21/2010

My offer for rides still stands.

Yeah I've had never had trouble being within 1000' of school property. Still, as an OC event it's better to not rely on lack of enforcement or a permit.

Advertising the OC Lunch

Apart from any students who are subscribers to this Forum, how are you getting the word out around Campus about this lunch? ODU has a Facebook Group, but it does not appear that you can post to it, and the is no means to join it. Could be an "invitation only" group.

However, FB would be the way to reach the most students most quidkly.

I've just been sending personal emails to people I know who carry. (About 9 people - most of them CC) Those are the unregistered folks. Hadn't thought about the Facebook group. I'm not exactly a huge fan given the CC bias and incorrect information on the page. It looks like I can post to the wall. I'll do that now.

Looks like we're at 5 or 6.

I should be standing out front beginning sometime between 12:30 and 12:45.

It was lunch for 5 with the staff at Retro Diner more than happy to have our business. We stayed and chatted from 12:30 - ~3pm. Lots of good discussions and intro to OC type talk. The people who I thought would definitely show were not in attendance... dunno what happened, maybe they forgot. Glad to have met those that were! Hopefully we'll have two more OCers on board.

I'll schedule another one for next month some time soon.
