JACKSONVILLE. Fla. -
When two men tried to hold up a Dollar General store on the Northside on Monday night, a customer pulled his gun and shot one of the men twice.
The second robber ran from the store and was seen leaving the scene in a SUV.
The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. at the store in the 1900 block of Dunn Avenue.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said when police arrived, one of the robbers was dead.
Police said the robber was shot by a man who had a concealed weapons permit who was alerted to the robbery by the store manager.
The second robber was seen wearing a blue bandana and sped east on Dunn Avenue in a small SUV.
"The robbers want to get in, they want to get out, and they want to make a clean break," said Channel 4 crime analyst Ken Jefferson. "However, these robbers got more than they bargained for."
Police are still investigating and searching for the second robber.
The store remained closed Tuesday.
"I was very disappointed to hear the news this morning that his store was robbed," said Dianne George, a frequent customer at the store.
This marked the sixth time in Jacksonville in the last year and a half an armed suspect was shot and killed during the commission of a crime.
"There's a lot of factors that you've got to weigh in or that you should weigh in," Jefferson said on what someone should do in a similar situation. "If you shoot this person, is there somebody behind them that's innocent that might get a ricocheted bullet? Or if you miss this person, where is that projectile going to go? Those are things you have to take into consideration."
Jefferson said that ultimately, those who have a concealed weapons permit have the right to use it or not if they feel threatened.
"We can debate whether or not this was the right thing to do or the wrong thing to do, or he placed himself in harm's way, and all of those factors could be so," Jefferson said. "However, at the end of the day, you've got one bad guy down, one at large, and no one hurt."
