HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The nation's two largest teachers unions want schools to revise or eliminate active shooter drills, asserting Tuesday that they can harm students' mental health and that there are better ways to prepare for the possibility of a school shooting.

The American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association joined with the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund in calling for an end to unannounced drills or drills that simulate gun violence.

The report released Tuesday recommends schools concentrate on training teachers to respond to an active shooter incident rather than drilling students.

n Indiana they were shooting teachers with rubber pellets so they would feel the adrenaline of what a school shooting would feel like," said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, which is part of Everytown. “In California recently, a superintendent hired a stranger to wear a mask to rattle the doors of classrooms without letting faculty and students know. We've seen students asked to pretend to be victims and lie down using fake blood in the hallway.” [really?]

In the "our own worst enemies" department, I'm seeing pro-gun conservatives mock this just because it's proposed by a teacher's union.

"Oh, let's just stop having fire drills, too!"

Suuuure... and do those fire drills involve making students think they're actually about to burn alive?

I dont think opposing anyone or anything connected with Shannon chuckle head and Everytown, will ever be considered being " our own worst enemy".

...you wanna scare the dickens outta youngsters?...unannounced cell phone confiscations by SWAT, without a warrant...likening them to gun confiscations...so the wee ones get used to SWAT confiscating their lawfully owned property...one good thing about these drills/simulations is that the wee ones will get used to cops barking orders and the consequences of not complying...post haste...

This isnt much different than bomb threats that went on all the time when I was in high school. It didnt traumatize kids.
We all knew it was garbage.

What the drills of active shooters will do is demonstrate to teachers staff and administrators how helpless they are unarmed facing an armed madman.

And how stupid the idea of depending on LE to do squat until long after the fact.

I have not looked it up, but I would bet the "rubber bullets" teachers are being shot with according to Shannon the demanded, is air soft.

Back in the fifties the teachers would get mad at me because I would not get under my desk during civil defense air raids during the cold war. My parents always said getting under your desk during a nuclear war was a joke.

...ah...the good old days...brings back fond memories...
...if I had jumped off that tractor as is shown in the film I would not have had to worry about a bomb blast...

so...ghost did PE teacher throw smoke grenades into the hallway for you and your student cohorts to walk thru to enhance the experience of a bomb threat?

storming a classroom with a "realistic" long gun or pistol shooting the air soft at the teacher or other students...isn't going to phreak out little johnny or susie...then being forced to walk out of the school hands in the air...nawll not in the least...

bit different than hiding under a elementary school desk pretending a nuclear air burst is eminent!!

I doubt smoke grenades are being used.
I'd also hazard a guess that the kids and teachers have prior knowledge of what is coming.

It's all about the "indoctrination". Teach them to be "sheep" early enough and they won't complain about getting "fleeced". :devilish:

That all depends on if the training makes any sense. Active shooter training as put forth by DHS and LE doesnt.

Will you should develop a training program that is better and place it in the market and show every body how it is done.

Alas FI, as noted by numerous knowledgeable and common folk across this nation the concept of identifying and putting up signage of gun free zones hasn't stopped anyone from shooting these places up so the concept just doesn't seem to work now does it?

Homeland's advice of RUN, HIDE, FIGHT doesn't work at all now does it? https://www.ready.gov/active-shooter

unannounced active shooter training in an educational institute by "by shooting teachers and students" do nothing but traumatize the teachers & students...

so as you have just advised...got any viable and workable concepts or just just throwing stones to see where they land?

before you chastise me for not providing my thought ~ teach teachers/students/citizens how to attack the singular shooter in mass while using fire extinguishers/chairs/trash cans to beat the crap out of the shooter...remember...the shooter only has 10+1 rounds then must reload...when a mass of people attack the shooter might get some causalits[ies] but my money is on when the shooter is about to get to beat to a pulp they will turn tail and run.

I give the same advice for those souls bullied...you sucker punch them when they are bullying they will retreat...

so oh Iinstructor...you are the one appropriately trained...your sage advice?
