I believe I am responsible for a no gun sign being installed......

Wife’s father is at a low rent assisted living facility in Medford, Wi. Every Sunday after church, I drop her off there, go grocery shopping, go back to pick her up. Open carry in summer, but conceal at church. Conceal if I need a jacket. So, basically I have been walking in there all summer open carry. They have two staff on duty, I had conversations about my firearm with 2 of them three different times. All said no problem. Never had any conversation with a manager or supervisor, don’t work on Sunday I suspect?

Three weeks ago I first noticed the sign, walked in concealed but didn’t say anything to anyone but wife.

Two Saturday’s ago there was an armed standoff on the street and residents of the home were asked to shelter in place, in center area away from windows. We had company and did not go that Sunday, and honestly, I forgot about it.

Yesterday, back to routine. Unarmed to enter. I know the one worker better than most and asked if it was because of me? She said no, we had this armed standoff, it’s because of THAT!

I said your sign was up BEFORE that happened. Oops. Then it was all company policy, i don’t make the rules, nobody asked me, etc. Probably mostly true, I suspect. These are people making $10-$13 an hour and turnover is atrocious. Care likely not much better.

Anyway, kind of at a loss what to do. It is a private facility. I asked her is she felt the sign would have stopped that guy the other day? She said no. She was also one I had talked to before while armed. She said the sign is not for you, you’re good, but I know that’s not true, nor does she have the power to grant that.

I guess the firearm is going in the trunk. I’m only there for a few minutes walking in, saying hi, and leaving. Real conversation is difficult, but it’s her Father so she visits him, as she should. I’m not inclined the make a big stink about the sign, it’s not like we’re going to move him because of it.

I would like to know if the sign is there because of me however. I suppose that is a conversation taken up with a manager.

I would never, ever go any where without a pistol. You might think it's just for a few minutes leaving your pistol in the trunk, but that is when something will happen. Life is funny like that. When I was being shot at in a parking lot, that was the day I knew never again to be unarmed. For places like an assisted living facility is the exact time to conceal and concealed means concealed. My motto is if I can't carry where I want to go then I just don't go there, period.

Just my opinion and it should be yours too. :p

While I generally agree, I do try the follow the law. Our no gun signs do carry the force of law, but it’s trespassing if you don’t leave when asked. Concealed well should not be an issue, other than with one’s own conscience. Not going there not really an option, I suppose I could stay outside and call.

You must lead an interesting life if you NEVER, EVER go anywhere without a pistol. You never, ever go the Post Office? You never, ever go into a courtroom? You never, ever go onto any federal property? You never, ever go onto an airplane? You never, ever go to any government building where guns are prohibited? You never set foot on any school property? How do you manage to live anything close to a NORMAL life and do that? You never, ever go onto any private property where the owners have decided to exercise their private property rights by banning guns? Or do you mean that you just ignore these gun bans and ignore the laws supporting them? Are you some specially authorized, super secret official with special authority to allow you to bypass these inconveniences? Which is it and how do you do it?

I do not use the Post Office on federal property. I do not fly, I drive and I stay within the U.S. I stay off federal property that prohibits carry. State government buildings cannot ban carry in Idaho, not even the statehouse. No gun signs have no force of law here in Idaho and even if they did, concealed means concealed. Courtroom, haven't been in one for many years. We all make choices, I choose to be armed at all times. So why does my life choice bother you so?

It's all perspective. You are responsible for you and your family, not the person, company, or state that asks you to disarm.

Remember, Dr Susan Gratia-Hupp wished she would have violated Texas law and kept her handgun with her while in that diner.

What makes you think that it bothers me? It doesn't bother me. I'd like to be able to do likewise, but so far have not been able to restrict my life enough to do so. I get called for jury duty sometimes. I have to go to government buildings at times to do business, I go to school functions at my grand daughter's school, I fly to visit my sister. I would not like to give up any of these things, so I go unarmed at times. I live a normal life. I try to obey the law. I respect the rights of other people and expect them to do likewise with my rights. If I see a law that I don't like, I try to get it changed.

So you ignore the law about no gun signs and suggest that others do the same. That is a violation of forum rules. That part does bother me.

Once again, "no gun signs" in Idaho have no force of law.

I suggested to the poster to view life's possible consequences and make decisions based on cost vs benefit. The Youtube video I posted is a history lesson on one persons experience of life's possible consequences of following an illegal law.

Just curious and not wanting to get into yet another urinating contest....

Do those "no guns signs" have the force of Idaho trespass law behind them? If so then perhaps while those signs might not have the force of specific gun laws behind them but would be covered under trespass law it would be misleading to say the signs "have no force of law".

Whether individual folks decide to follow the law, specific gun law or trespass law, or be a scofflaw while demanding rights be respected is a discussion I don't wish to get into yet again.

While this apparently is true in Idaho, it is not true for Wisconsin. So, not exactly a fair comparison. I’m sure there are a few, if not many people in Wisconsin who do conceal where there are signs, I try to avoid being one of them. My wife has a rather high profile job, at least for a small town, and I do my best to not do anything that might jeopardize that, or even catch attention, like carrying a gun in school, or even speeding in a school zone. I do realize that being dead ends up most likely being the less attractive alternative in a situation where a firearm would/might have kept one alive, but it’s all a matter of weighing the options.

I’m still considering talking to the manager, but as I said previously, I’m not inclined to make a big stink out of it. I would like to know however, if the sign is a result of me open carrying there.

From handgunlaw. No Firearm” signs in Idaho have no force of law unless they are posted on property that is specifically mentioned in State Law as being off limits to those with a Permit/License to Carry. ... Even if the property is not posted and you are asked to leave you must leave. August 2017

Idaho trespass law is very narrowly tailored. handgunlaw is always overly cautious.

I was looking back to see if she was looking back to see if I was looking back to see if she was looking back at me.

Or, something like that. Still not about Idaho gun laws, maybe it is.

Arrested for passing a sign and not for trespass...nonsensical.

Newer, yes.

Buck Owens and some woman, I believe The Browns before that. Maybe somebody before that, I’m not that old.

Back on topic, I just realized that Care Partners, the elderly care unit has several other facilities, one about 4 blocks from my house. So, I’m going to stop there and see if they also have the no “fun” signs up. If it’s only at the one I go into, that kinda tells me it’s me, though probably not conclusive.

The sign ( or things in general) don’t bother me as much as being lied to about it. If it’s there because of me, I can handle that and have that discussion. So, I’m still leaning towards talking to a manager after I check out this other facility.

Leaving for St Louis via Chicago right now so it probably won’t be till Friday or Saturday.

Be happy you weren’t in Chicago and SW suburbs on Wednesday. Big ice storm, I heard over 1600 accidents. I must have seen 200 wrecked vehicles. 294 a standstill so took city streets all the way across town to 94 and 130th to load my lead poisoning. Big mistake. Yes, 43,000 lbs of actual lead going to a smelter in Herculaneum, MO. I departed unscathed other than my stress level pretty much to the moon. I’ve never seen so much stupid in one place. Wait, not much different than normal, just worse.

Stopped at the Care Partner around the corner from my house. There is no No Gun sign on this one. While I was looking one of the workers came out and asked me if she could help me. Briefly explained what I was looking for. She knew nothing of it, but said she would assume the same thing and also that her Dad always carried. I was concealed to to the weather requiring a large jacket.

Not sure, next step. Wife says forget it, don’t make a stink. I’d like to at least know, and make them admit if it was due to me. It’s a private facility, so they can do as they wish and I see no real expectation of me getting them to reverse, but of course with out talking that would not happen for sure.
