I was talking to my mother-in-law yesterday and found out she is going to get a CCL. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that. My wife was very surprised. She said "Mother, what to you need a gun for?" She saw the look of disapproval on my face and added a "giggle". As I said before my wife is not exactly pro-2A. She is starting to get it though. My MIL wants me to take her to the gun range to see what kind she wants, maybe I will try to see if my wife wants to come.

Is your wife familar with Warren vs District of Columbia?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_v._District_of_Columbia

Three women beaten and raped in their own home for 14 hours and the police didn't respond. The Supreme Court decided that the police have no duty to protect citizens. I wish we lived in a nice world, but some people are there are just evil.

She can also check the NRA Women on Target program

http://www.nrahq.org/women/isc/clinics.asp

$40 for 4 hours of instruction with live shooting (they provide the firearms and rounds).

** you probably know all of this already, but I like to share - it's always great to make new shooters **

You can search youtube for NRA women on target to view some vids.

My wife has gone and loved it. She wanted to take some friends this year, but then she got pregnant, so no range trips for her.

Some of the instructors are men, and some are women, but ALL of the shooters are women.

I have one sister who has her CCL ... took the free course from Wisconsin Carry! and another who does not. The sister who does not has no objections to guns and carry, she just feels safe in her world. She has access to guns and knows how to use them. She did accept a can of pepper spray from me to chase away dogs while bike riding.

Actually, they responded once - looking around the outside of the house.

For women who want to get the basics in a classroom, this place is a bit north of Waukesha (north of Hwy. 16) & runs all-women clinics several times a summer.
http://www.heritageshooting.org/
Sat. 21JUL 9a-1p women intro to shotgun
Sat. 28JUL 9a-1p women intro to pistol
Sat. 11AUG 8:30a-4p youth shooting sports day
Sat. 08SEP 8:30a-4:30p women's shooting sports day (NRA Women On Target)

I'd been helping with these since I became an instructor last summer, but found out when I applied for membership to the club where they're based that I'm not welcome "until you've stayed out of the news for a year".
(Or at least, the one person who's the gateway for processing applications doesn't want me there, & he's also in charge of the classes. I was never presented to the membership meeting, as the application requires, so there's no telling how the members themselves would vote.)
So, I won't be there any more. :(

This is not the first time this has come up for me.
My wife was born inMilwaukee, and for the most part, she had very little contact with firearms(guns are bad). Her dad, when she wasyoung, did take her to a friends farm and shot a .22, but she never liked it,and never so much as thought that she would ever need to know how guns work(guns are bad). She never thought shemight see a day that she might need a gun (guns are bad).
Thank God, so far,she never has needed one.
I met Wendy about 20years ago now. When we made the choiceto marry, I explained that if she wouldmake the choice to live with me (for life), she would have to learn the basicuse of the guns that I owned at the time (I have more now).
I would have to say,at first she did not like it, and I would go further, and say she thought of itlike some kind of joke.
She put up with mywants, and she not only learned to shoot and maintain my arms, she today is nota bad shot at all.
At our 17 yearmark, she made the choice to now own her first gun. She has her own .357 (I have a .38 Spl). After the time we have been together she nowwants to learn more about my AR-15.

My point is that she never even thought she would enjoy theshooting sports, and today, she wants to start her Appleseed class ASAP (with her own long gun).
She in 17 years hasmade a lot of changes in her thoughts about guns, and the fact that we evenhave shooting sports. In a few moreyears, I would not be shocked if she does not surpasses my knowledge.
It takes time, and Ithink it has been time well spent.
I love my wife, and am very happy that after I am gone, shewill retain the knowledge of self protection. She will keep her knowledge basegrowing. She enjoy it now. It took some time, but...

17 years, worth every day.

On the side, now I need more money, to keep up withher new gun wants...

I posted that for someone who gave me the typical "You don't need a gun, that's what the police are for" line. They had never heard about that case and was just outraged not only by what happened to those poor women but by how they got screwed by the justice system. I think EVERY state forum here on OCDO should put a sticky on that link and at the top as MANDATORY reading for everyone.

While not exactly stickied, I do have Warren vs DC referenced in my thread New to OC in WI about in the middle of page under heading "Why carry? Law Enforcement has no duty to Protect:" Along with a few other cases.
