I've lived in Brattleboro for 15 years and have never seen one example of a citizen open carrying. Nor have I seen one gun rack in a pickup. I have seen far too many Prius hybrids with anti nuclear slogans on them.
It's legal for me to carry openly here but the local police are very twitchy and would most likely draw down on you with their .40's, slam you to the ground, cuff you, taser you and drag you away where it would be incumbent upon you to prove your right to carry openly. What a way to ruin a perfectly beautiful day. I'll keep mine concealed, thanks. However, I don't have any problem visibly showing my stun gun to the gang banger wannabees dragging their slathering pit bulls around. Often, these dogs outweigh their owners and visibly want to attack my smaller dogs. I maintain a vigilant mindset to combat situations like this.
Also, it's no longer legal to be naked in Brattleboro, a selectboard ordinance put an end to that, thankfully. It drew serious predators to the area.
One last thing: it's legal for VT residents to buy long guns in NH and I deal with a good old boy over there when I get the itch for a new black rifle. He told me that the Chief of Police in Keene told him that "yes, it's legal to open carry here, but you'll most likely be drawn upon and braced by the local police while they determine your intentions."
Being an old guy myself, I do not need this kind of problem (where I live) and am content to keep mine concealed.
Long live the South, sad to say the North is ruled by anti-gun ignorance coming out of Albany and Boston that influences the nicer areas of New England despite the laws on their books.

I've never had an issue open carrying in Bellow's Falls, Brattleboro, or Keene.

The Keene police are WELL AWARE of open carry being legal.

If you had to live with the South's gun laws, you'd yearn for northern New England.

I do, and I do.

I have family in Brattleboro and I was talking about how OC is totally legal there and their response was "that's just not right" and in the same conversation the nudity law (or lack thereof) as if that was normal and I said I'd rather see my neighbor mowing his lawn OCing than naked. It's definitely one backwards town.

Yeah, but don't forget about the primo weed..... like... wow man!!!

Brattleboro is the fruits and nuts capitol of Vermont. Just the truth. Very anti town (anti-gun, anti-hunting, and so on). I've heard of issues down there but don't have any specific incidents I could cite. There isn't anything there to attract me anyways.

Yeah, but they're NOT anti-nudity, anti-sex, anti-drugs, anti-pot... now are they? Doesn't that seem to be a "contradiction"? Has anyone every heard of an Amendment in the U.S. Constitution "the right of the people to smoke pot shall not be infringed"?

Well, I guess i'll find out if it's a backwards town when i'm OC'ing there this summer. All jokes aside, most folks seem nice enough in Brattleboro. I think the problem is it's too close to Mass, so there's a lot more liberials and therefore more anti-gun, or in this case, anti OC'ers there.

What are u talking about? Vermont is ALL Liberals!! Most all NYC transplants and retirees (as well as some from Mass). The ONLY reason they allow guns in Vt, guns to be carried, is because it is written into their State Constitution... way back.... when Vt had "patriots" living there, long before "liberals".

No license is necessary to carry openly or concealed. You can't carry within 1,000 feet of a school or in a bank, not sure if there are any other places you can't carry.

Hey Indiana, are you tallking about Vermont up there? "You can't carry within 1,000 feet of a school....."??? How would you know that you are within 1,000 feet of any school, at any time, at all times? 1,000 feet is 333 yards, that's 3 football fields. That could be 3 blocks away, 3 streets away, parrallel to where you are, behind houses and buildings. How would you know? Are you suppose to get a Map of all of Vermont and "map out" the location of every "school"? What constitutes a "school"? Elementary school, Jr. H.S., H.S., College, Music School, Karate School, Cooking School? That sounds very "vague".

Out of NYC, Westchester County, and NJ too!! Wow!! U had a lot to say. "gang banger wannabees" in Brattleboro, Vt... hummmm????......Is that like "NBA Star wannabees from Munchkinland?"..... I'm sure there are alot of really "tough" guys in Brattleboro.... cough cough... What? no Prius Hybrids with a gun rack in the rear window? I'm sure they all stilll have their "John Kerry/John Edwards" Bumper stickers. Well it seems very simple and easy for you to prove your right to carry openly,... it's in the Vermont State Constitution!!! Yeah, I heard that, that it's no longer legal to be riding around on a bike naked in Brattleboro, anymore (which it seemed only old men did anyways. Never any hot young babes!!). "a new black rifle"? A "black betty"? "oh black betty, bam a lam...". Yup!! Liberalism is a Mental Disorder!!!

I've never heard of any provision of the U.S. Constitution that allows the government to say you can't smoke it if you want to. For citizens, anything not prohibited is legal. For government, anything not specifically authorized is prohibited.

Why Brattleboro, specifically? If you hop right across the river to the Keene area, you get open carry that's even better than Vermont, with no places off limits. Yes, you do need a $10 license to carry a loaded concealed handgun, or to carry a loaded handgun in a car, but that's pretty cheap insurance. And again -- nowhere is off limits in NH by state law, except courtrooms. Full preemption, no local laws about possession or carry.

How can OCing be better in NH over Vermont? In Vermont you can carry openly or concealed with no permits required. Off limit places are the same as everywhere else, no courthouse, school, post office.
So tell me again, how is NH better?

As long as you don't actually go into the school you don't have to worry. Vermont does not enforce e the Federal ban on school property. It is against the Vermont constitution.

The NH list of places off limits:
1. Courthouses

That's it, that's the list. You can carry on school property or even in the school itself, unless you're a student.

I would double check the school stuff. Vermont is a Constitutional carry state and there is the mandated 1000 foot rule. It is a Federal law, not local stuff.

Ummm what?? Your talking about VT being too liberial when you reside in Boston?? THE MOST anti-gun city and state in the union? Seriously?? And please don't talk about VT not having any more patriots. Boston, the birthplace of the American Revolution has done a complete 180 degree turn from 1770. You may want to look at what YOU gave up in Boston, land of liberials before bashing others pal........

Yes and EVERY local cop I talked to stated they do not enforce federal laws. The law is used if you are selling drugs in front of the school, are stalking kids, or enter the actual school property. There is NO local cop in Vermont that will arrest you for driving by a school. I was told walking directly in front while OC will get 911 calls but they will just warn you not to do things that attract attention. There was a HS Student with hunting guns left in the car in the school lot and he got a suspension, but no federal charges. This is Vermont, not Massachusetts, but there are a lot of Massholes moving here though!
