I have a good female friend that has two kids a girl (kelly) 6 and a boy 4. My friend is getting married this summer to a drunken jackwagon, but thats a different story for a different thread. Me her, her two kids and another friend were in Des moines over the weekend. This is how a conversation went between me and my friends 6 yo girl: (who is almost too smart for her own good sometimes)

Kelly: How come you carry a gun?
me: (knelt down as to be at her level) Because I love you and your brother and also your mom sooooo much and I want to be able to protect us should something bad happen.
Kelly: How much do you love us? This much? ( Holds her arms out as far as she can)
Me: you know how far it is to the moon and back? Take that times a million and thats how much I love you guys!!! (shes beeming from ear to ear)
and all of a sudden, her face got just as serious as could be and she asked:
kelly: how do you know something bad will happen?
me: well I don't sweetheart, but you practice your fire drills in school don't you? Do you know when and where a fire is going to happen?
kelly: well no you practice it just in case, you never want a fire to happen...duh...that would be bad!
me: yes it would be bad and I hope you never have a time that you have to really need to use it and thats kinda like me carrying a gun, I hope to god I never have to use it, but if I do I know how to use it properly, because like your fire drills, I have practiced and I know how to properly and safely use it. It's a tool that If need be, can be used to keep any bad guys from hurting us.
kelly: We learned about strangers and bad guys in school.
me: well sweety not all strangers are bad guys
kelly: yea I know that! (with a extremely sarcastic roll of the eyes)

And without missing a beat kelly turns around and askes her mom: "how come daddy doesn't love us enough to carry a gun to protect us"
I had to turn around because I didn't want her to see me laughing at her serious question. all I could do was say yes, yes ,yes in my head! :D
Her mother now listening intently to our conversation said I don't know, you will have to ask dad that.

An hour or so later were in Target and I was getting plenty of stares from this one lady. She had two small kids in the cart with her. One was probably 4 and the other was maybe 2. You could tell she wanted to rip into me, but I smiled at her and asked how she was.........I got no response but a glare and a walk-off. I kept my composure and smiled at her every chance I got untill finally we met head on in the toy isle. She Finally said........Your making me nervous carring that gun. You shouldn't carry a guy where there are small kids around, especially mine!!

And again without missing a beat Kelly spoke up to the lady:

kelly: Joel loves us enough that he wants to protect us from bad things that may happen to us. Do you love your kids enough to carry a gun to protect them from the bad guys?

I was swelling up insde with pride! and on the inside I was doing a dance!! I looked up to wait for her answer but she was already going around the corner towards the front to leave.

I was grinning ear to ear as I said lets go Pick out two movies you want sweety!!

All of this from a two minute conversation that I had with a 6 yo!!!! I so wish she was my kid!!!!

That's awesome! Kids can be so much smarter than most adults give them credit for. Glad you explained it so clearly to her, and that she "gets" it!

Children are precious!

Isn't it amazing how relatively simple it is to explain something to a child? When a message gets convoluted, everyone, especially children get confused. Just think what a "con" job is being done to our children in oh so many (not all) public schools about the inherent evil of guns. We must get involved in public school education, even if some of us choose to home school. Good job opencarryjoe.

That is so cool. I can't even imagine how bad that lady felt, to be told off by a 6 year old. Priceless

Well she did it!

Oh believe me ive tried!!

Well she married the drunken jackwagon, nothing I could do about that, but the funny part of the whole thing is that 2 days before the wedding, while all her family was in town for the wedding) him and a few of his co-workers went to a bar and got themselves into a hell of a bar fight and he and 4 others were arrested for assult with willfull injury (a class D fealony). They had to take up a collection for get him out since he was released on a $5,000 cash only bond! What a waste of space. Karmas a bitch!!

Ouch...
Me thinks that this marriage is not going to last as long as some people hoped for.
Hope you are there for her and the two kids when it falls apart.

Maybe this will be the "wake up" call...

Good luck!
