I am getting disgusted that these conversations keep ending this way. Other people read these forums, and it is an embarrassment, and with the immaturity displayed here, I'm not sure why anyone would want to support our community.

Well said.

Some here assume that only the prejudicially polarized will come here to support or attack. Twice now recently I've introduced folks without guns prejudice, and had to wince at the quality of the collegiality.

Yah you make me wince all the time Doug with your $20 words. Knock it off will you.

Like boric acid powder for the list...

Might I suggest using the "Ignore" option found in your settings. It's sort of like boric acid powder in your shoes... it takes away the bad smell.

no need for a gun?

Man shot on Milwaukee's south side

http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/102237334.html

Yup, no need for a gun and no need for one in your car.

Hi, I'm new, after lurking for a while. Ive been reading the posts and sometimes rants. Me, I have no problems with guns. Some people should clearly not have them. Wondering no need for a gun and backing it up with yet another Milwwaukee shooting? Sort of ironic. A gun is what sparked the shooting. The person with the gun felt a need to have a gun. So, the shooter had a need for the gun. Thus my confusion. Assuming the shooter is not a felon, and otherwise not prohibited from gun ownership, what is to be said about the need for a gun?

Well, that is an interesting way of looking at this case (we don't have a lot of info to go on).
What was said is that the man was just sitting in his car, when he was shot. With this in mind, I don't think the shooter was "protecting" anyone, and if he was not a felon before, he is now.
The "no need for a gun" is the poor man that was shot (as per the very short story), in his car (a place that we can not carry a loaded gun). If he had taken the time to protect his person (and broke the law), he just might not have been shot...
Now as far as "A gun is what sparked the shooting.", well if it were a knife would it be better? The fact is the law tells us we can not carry a loaded gun in a car.

Welcome to OCDO!

Very good questions.

What 'we' usually assume is that if you are willing to commit a crime with a handgun, that you are a criminal. What we also usually mean when we say 'it would of been nice to have a gun' is that, for example in this case, we cannot legally have a loaded handgun in a car. In addition, it has to be in a case, unloaded.

While you may be correct that the perpetrator in this case was a legal OC'er, him committing a crime with it makes him a criminal.

What I have said all along is this. Do not regulate my carrying of my weapon. However, if I use it to commit an illegal act, use the use of it to extend my prison sentence or otherwise make it tougher on me. In other words, don't make the tool the crime, make the improper use of the tool the crime.

The word felon and the word criminal are being reduced to meaninglessness, and the presumption of innocence too.

A criminal, the word as epithet, is guilty of breaking the law. A felon is or has been liable to more than 365 days of incarceration.

If a felon may properly be disbarred his rights under color of law then we can all be legally disarmed merely by sufficiently lowering the bar of felony.

This is very true Doug.
But in the story from the JS (http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/102237334.html), I would say the man with the gun earned his felony.
